Quality of EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Reapproved This Year

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences, is ranked first in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for publication rankings, with 99 journals indexed by Web of Science in 2019. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences has published 1,025 journals since its establishment in 1986, till  the end of 2019, and with over 11,000 citations, has displayed the success of being one of the prominent Faculties of Arts and Sciences whether in Turkey or the TRNC. The faculty which provides education with 60 full-time faculty members, has an annual publication average of 1.63 per academician, and is the strongest Faculty of Arts and Sciences in this area.

New Programs Available to Students

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which provides in total 7 undergraduate programs, including Actuarial Sciences (English), Mathematics and Computer Sciences (English), Molecular Biology and Genetics (English), Interpretation and Translation (English), Psychology (English and Turkish), Turkish Language and Literature (Turkish), has completed all the preparations to additionally provide Physics (English) and Chemistry (English) undergraduate programs during the 2020-2021 Academic Year. In this context, Physics (English), and Chemistry (English) Undergraduate programs have received authorization from YÖDAK and are awaiting authorization from YÖK. Also within the faculty remit are General Psychology Postgraduate (PG) programs, Mathematics and Computing PG and Doctorate, Physics PG and Doctorate, Chemistry PG and Doctorate, Turkish Language and Literature PG, Medical Biotechnology PG without Thesis and Information Sciences PG without Thesis programs. The Urban Archeology and Cultural Heritage Management Program (with and without Thesis) again, has received authorization from YÖDAK and will begin to accept student applications when it has received authorization from YÖK. EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences also provides opportunities for EMU students to develop themselves in multiple disciplines and provide the necessary infrastructure for a good career with many Double Major and Minor programs.

High Quality Education and Contribution to Society

As an indicator of the great importance given to the quality of education and research potential in line with its vision and mission, EMU was included in the 801-1000 band in the UK University Higher Education Rating Board Times Higher Education (THE) in the World University Rankings for 2019-2020 Academic Year. According to QS-Stars, one of the most important UK-based higher education quality institutions, EMU was awarded 5 stars in Education and Opportunities. EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Natural Sciences Departments (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biological Sciences Departments) were successful in the 601-800 band in the Times Higher Education 2020 evaluation, and in subjects “Physics and Astronomy”, “Chemistry”, “Geology, Environment, Land and Sea Sciences” and “Mathematics and Statistics” subjects, EMU succeeded 6th place in Turkey.

The Physics and Biological Sciences Departments played a large role in the success of EMU achieving first place across the TRNC, in the Nature Index 2020 rankings, category of Physical Sciences. On the other hand, within the framework of the cooperation between Oxford University and EMU, the EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Biological Sciences Department played an important role with the women's health project in the TRNC.

Making a Difference with Fully Equipped Laboratories

Physics 1, Physics 2, Psychology Undergraduate, Mathematics and Computer Undergraduate, Translation and Interpretation Laboratory and Mathematics Research Laboratory, which have all been opened in the last two years at EMU Faculty of Science and Literature, are among the biggest indicators of the importance given by the faculty to education, research and quality. Underlining that the faculty has an important place in EMU's research infrastructure, EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan underlined that besides the laboratories that were opened in the last two years at the faculty; General Chemistry, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Psycho-Biology, Cognitive Behavior, Translation and Interpretation and Physico-Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Organic Chemistry, Photovoltaics, Thin Film Metrology, Liquid Crystal Physics, Translation Laboratory and three computer laboratories were providing the opportunity for researchers to work and conduct experiments. .

In Possession of International Memberships and Accreditations

The EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, gives great importance to international memberships and accreditations, with its Department of Mathematics a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), its Molecular Biology and Genetic Science program accredited with AHPGS, which is an accreditation in the field of Health Sciences and has its headquarters in Germany, and the English Psychology degree program accredited by the Turkish Psychologists Association (TPD) Accreditation, making it one of 12 accredited in Turkey, and EMU the only accredited University in the TRNC. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan emphasized that as a result of the high quality education and opportunities offered at the faculty, graduates can be admitted to graduate and doctorate programs in world leading universities and can easily find jobs in the market and take their place in competitive business environments.
