New Media and Communication Undergraduate Program (B.A., 4 Years)

The Department of New Media and Journalism at Eastern Mediterranean University was established in 1997 as Journalism and the program is renewed in 2017 in parallel with the rapid changes in the communication technologies that requires 360 degree education which means that the students of journalism have to know print journalism, video journalism, digital media, data journalism, public relations and video editing at the same time. The renewed program will help the students to reflect the social, political and economic problems that are prepared from a critical perspective through new media technologies. The digital media environment will help a rapid public awareness in public issues. The mission of the department is to train its students to be able to approach questions about the world from a variety of perspectives including sociologically, culturally, economically and politically and to have the ability to engage effectively with communication technologies and social media tools, to develop as reflexive readers and writers and to work toward their goals while engaged with and expressing professional and journalistic ethic.

General Information

The education at the department is centered round a tripod: Journalism courses which are geared towards the profession; Communication courses which are theoretical; and University electives which are based on general education practices, especially the last two years are mostly geared towards professional theories and practice. While Photography is offered as a compulsory course, underwater photography course is offered as an elective. As well as theory, students are provided with opportunities aiming to develop their practical skills. Students must do internship for 40 days in one of the respected newspapers before graduation. Each student is expected to produce a six-page newspaper as the senior project which will be evaluated by a jury of five, two of which will be established journalists from the field. Every news story, photograph and other material used in the newspaper are expected to be original.

Education

The main aim of the program is to introduce the students with the most up-to-date developments in the area of the New Media and Journalism. The program provides courses such as print journalism, video journalism, digital media, data journalism, public relations and video editing at the same time. New Media and Journalism program will help the students to reflect the social, political and economic problems that are prepared from a critical perspective through new media technologies. Facilities

Traditional approaches towards journalism have been changing with the latest developments in technology. Keeping this in mind, the department constantly upgrades its curriculum and makes it more feasible for the students’ expectations. For example, Desktop Publishing and Online Journalism are two courses which would require the students to use the latest technology. Additionally, the students are able to convert their knowledge, which they have gained during courses, into practical execution at the Center of Research and Communication for Peace, EMU-TV, Gündem Newspaper and GündemNet. Moreover, the students can also become “student assistants” and contribute towards their education financially as well as gaining professional experience.

Career Opportunities

The graduates of the program will be able to work in varieties of positions in the media sector such as online media environments, newspapers, radio and TV stations, public relations and advertisement departments and particularly social media management in all media and business sector. The graduates can find jobs as news correspondents, sport journalist, photo-journalist, page editor, photo editor, editor in chief, news editor, new coordinator, internet editor, online news editor. Our graduate can also continue their education to lead an academic career.
