Department of Mathematics

Programs

The Department of Mathematics offers 3 undergraduate programs: one in Mathematics & Computer Science, one in Statistics & Computer Science, and one in Actuarial Science. A total of 6 postgraduate programs are also offered, including 4 at master’s level – one in Mathematics, one in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science, one in Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling and Simulation (Collaboration with University of Pau and Pays De L’adour, Uppa, France) and one in Information Science without thesis – and 2 at doctoral level, one in Mathematics and one in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science.

Additionally, students of the Department of Mathematics have many options to complete double major programs together with other departments: students in the Actuarial Science program may complete a double major from the Department of Banking and Finance, while students in the Mathematics & Computer Science program may complete a double major from the Department of Physics. There are also internal double major programs, such as a double major in Actuarial Science and Mathematics & Computer Science. Minor programs are also available to students of the Department of Mathematics, including a minor program in Economics and a minor program in Molecular Biology & Genetics. Students from other departments, such as the Department of Economics and the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Biology, are also welcome to complete a minor program in Mathematics & Computer Science by taking six courses from the Department of Mathematics.

Our Mission

The Department of Mathematics aims to:

  • bring up qualified and self-confident professionals who possess the skills to make a difference both in the society and their professional lives through conducting research and follo wing the latest trends in their fields,
  • provide theoretical instruction for those who would like to study ma thematics at an advanced level in line with internationally recognized mathematics programs, deliver education considering the skills and interest areas of the students and expand employment opportunities for the graduates,
  • equip the students with the skills to apply theoretical knowledge into practice through developing computer software and bring up qualified software designers for the informatics sector,
  • create the opportunity for the students to increase their expertise in specific areas of mathematics through the inclusion of the area electives into the program,
  • bring up qualified mathematicians and computer specialists demanded by different institutions or companies such as the country's or region's industry, the state institute of statistics and the state planning institute.

Departmental Facilities

Department of Mathematics boasts highly-qualified and experienced faculty members who studied at prominent universities and have published numerous books and articles in their field of expertise. The education offered to students is supported by extensive research facilities such as technical equipment, highly-developed computer laboratories, Internet and rich library resources. Our department has adopted a system enabling effective student-academic staff communication. Students are provided with a comfortable environment whenever they wish to discuss their problems with academic staff.

Distinguishing Attributes

The curriculum of the program designed to provide the necessary theoretical knowledge in mathematics for those who wish to pursue advanced studies in line with internationally recognized mathematics programs, while also offering instruction tailored to students’ interests, abilities, and future career opportunities closely resembles the mathematics curricula of leading public universities in Türkiye, such as Ankara, Hacettepe, İstanbul, and Gazi.

In the Times Higher Education world university rankings of 2026 for physical sciences (which includes mathematics and statistics), EMU ranks as one of the best 400 in the world. Along with this, the department also offers an array of area elective courses, all contributing to the expertise level of the students in different areas. The department offers postgraduate and doctoral degree studies.

Major Accomplishments

Since its establishment, our department has graduated more than "00 PhD students, over 300 master's students, and around 700 undergraduate students. Within the last five years, faculty members at EMU Mathematics Department have successfully published more than 200 articles in journals indexed by Science Citation Index (SCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E). According to the Times Higher Education subject-specific rankings for Physical Sciences published in 2026, EMU ranks among the top 400 universities in the world in subjects related to Physical Sciences, which includes mathematics and statistics, and as the best one among all Turkish universities in these subjects. Furthermore, our Department takes pride in traditionally organizing the annual “Onay Fadıl Demirciler Inter-High School Mathematics Competition,” which this year marks its thirtieth edition, as well as the “Ali Karasel Inter-Middle School Mathematics Competition,” now in its fourth year.

Career Opportunities

Students who graduate from our undergraduate programs may pursue the following career opportunities:

Actuarial Science:

Graduates of the Actuarial Science program have strong career prospects in insurance companies, pension funds, banks, and investment firms. They work in areas such as risk assessment, financial planning, and actuarial consulting, as well as in government agencies and international organizations requiring expertise in risk management and forecasting.

Mathematics and Computer Science:

Graduates of the Mathematics and Computer Science program can pursue careers in software development, data analytics, internet programming, and web design. They also have a strong foundation for roles in research, academia, and technology-driven sectors such as cybersecurity and big data.

Statistics and Computer Science:

Graduates of the Statistics and Computer Science program are in high demand in fields such as data analytics, software engineering, and research. They may work as data analysts or data scientists in sectors including finance, healthcare, and technology, as well as in government institutions and consulting firms specializing in data-driven decision-making.
