Post-Earthquake Disorders and Struggles Discussed at EMU

A seminar titled “Post-Earthquake Organic Disorders and Psychological Struggles” was organized within the collaborations of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Social and Cultural Activities Directorate, Student Clubs Unit and District 135 North Cyprus Lions Clubs Executive Members. Held at the Champion Angels Amphitheatre in EMU Health Sciences Faculty building, the seminar was attended by Health Sciences Faculty Vice Deans Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yasin Yurt and Assist. Prof. Dr. Asiye Yeter Başaran, District 135 North Cyprus Lions Clubs General Director Ln. Fikret Şendil, academic personnel, lions club members and students.

 

Girne American University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine academic staff member Dr. Hüseyin Cenkler and the Chair of EMU Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center Dr. Psych. Fatoş Özeylem Küçük delivered presentations during the “Post-Earthquake Organic Disorders and Psychological Struggles” seminar.

 

In his presentation, Dr. Hüseyin Cenkler talked about organic disorders that might develop following a traumatic experience such as an earthquake and potential disorders experienced by individuals who got trapped under the debris in earthquake disasters. In addition, Dr. Cenkler provided vital information in terms of the kidney failure, including its diagnosis, treatment, and measures to be taken in this regard.

 

On the other hand, EMU Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center’s Chair Dr. Psych. Fatoş Özeylem Küçük presented information about psychological struggles associated with experiencing an earthquake disaster. Dr. Psych. Küçük explained the reasons causing individual and collective psychological struggles, the most common psychological struggles observed during the post-earthquake period and how psychological interventions are organized. Discussing the emotional, cognitive, physical and social reactions of people following an earthquake disaster, Dr. Psych. Küçük shared scientific data on the prevalence of psychological difficulties that may arise after earthquakes in Turkey and different countries, and finally, provided information on the circumstances in which individuals who have been directly or indirectly exposed to earthquakes should be referred to professional help.

 

At the end of the seminar, Dr. Hüseyin Cenkler and Dr. Psych. Fatoş Özeylem Küçük were presented with plaques by the Social and Cultural Activities Directorate, Student Club Unit Supervisor Çiğdem Duvacı, for their contributions to the event.
