Two New Undergraduate Programs at EMU Faculty of Communication

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) continues to grow by launching new programs that are to start student admissions in 2019 – 2020 Academic Year Fall Semester. The Higher Education Planning, Accreditation and Coordination Council (YÖDAK) and Turkish Republic Council of Higher Education (YÖK) approved New Media and Journalism Undergraduate English and Turkish medium programs of the Faculty of Communication, Department of New Media and Journalism which will start student admissions in the upcoming academic semester.

4 Year Programs

New Media and Journalism Undergraduate Program involves a training of 4-years. The main aim of the program is to educate its students, the future journalists, to be individuals who own professional ethic values, are endowed with the sense of social responsibility, are advocates for freedom of press and expression, have the skills necessary to analyze social, economic, cultural and political issues and, have qualified knowledge. The courses delivered with the aim stated above include practical as well as theoretical education.

Privileged Graduates

The Media Centre established within the scope of the university provides students with the opportunity to gain experience of preparing news for more than one medium as to get ready for the flexibility and holism required in today’s journalism environment. The students are able to convert their knowledge, which they have gained during courses, into practical experience at Gündem Newspaper, GündemNet, Radio EMU and EMU TV. Students can also familiarize themselves with different cultures as a result of academic staff members and fellow students that arrived at the university from different countries and academic traditions. In this multicultural environment, students not only prepare for a profession that requires great ethical responsibility but also gain the opportunity to open up to the world after graduation.

Traditional approaches towards journalism have been changing with the latest developments in technology. Keeping this in mind, the department constantly upgrades its curriculum and makes it more feasible for the students’ expectations. For example, Desktop Publishing and Online Journalism are two courses which require students to use the latest technology.

Career Opportunities

As a result of the courses delivered by expert members of academic staff, students can prepare for their futures in the best way possible. Graduates of the Department can find jobs such as news correspondents, sport journalists, photo-journalists, page editors, photo editors, editors in chief, news editors and news coordinators. They can be responsible for tabloid news, sports, foreign news or economics. Graduates can also work in a variety of positions at radio and television channels, newspaper representative offices and for online journalism companies.
