EMU Architecture Faculty HERA-C Hosted 5th International Symposium and a Workshop Entitled Divided Capital Nicosia

Hosted by Housing Education Research and Advisory Center (HERA-C)  operating under Eastern Mediterranean University, Architecture Faculty, 5th International Symposium and Workshop of the International Association of People Environment Studies (IAPS) took place in Nicosia Bedesten under the title of “Borders: Conflict and/or Potential – Experiencing Nicosia” between 28 and 31 October 2015.

As the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia as a politically divided city has been selected as a venue to create a common understanding of conflicted urban settlements. Built on a rich cultural heritage and diversity, socially and spatially bordered character of this island city enables a wide opportunity for discussing various aspects of conflicts and potentials by focusing on different layers within a multi-disciplinary approach

Taking place with the participation of academicians and undergraduate and postgraduate students from Queens University of Ireland, Tirana Polytechnic of Albany, Tel Aviv University of Israel,  Maltepe University of Turkey, Özyeğin University of Turkey, Eastern Mediterranean University, Girne American University, and European University of Lefke of Cyprus, the symposium and workshop took place under the four main themes as ‘Division/Divided City’, ‘Borders and Territories”, “Culture, Identity, Memory and Space” and “Heritage, Branding and the Image of the City”.

The scientific organisation committee of the event was formed by Hülya Turgut (IAPS-Culture & Space Network Coordinator), Şebnem Önal Hoşkara (Eastern Mediterranean University, Architecture Faculty Dean), Peter Kellett (IAPS-Culture & Space Network Coordinator), Kağan Günçe (Director of HERA-C, Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty), Resmiye Alpar Atun (Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty), Esra Akbalık (Maltepe University, Architecture and Design Faculty), Demet Mutman (Maltepe University, Architecture and Design Faculty), Nil Paşaoğluları Şahin (Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty), Hale Sinirlioglu (Maltepe University, Architecture and Design Faculty) and Fatameh Ghafari Yavasoli (Eastern Mediterranean University, Architecture Faculty).
