23rd Civil Engineering Week in EMU

The 23rd Civil Engineering Week organized by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration with EMU Construction Club recently took place in EMU. The event which took place over a period of three days included a range of seminars and activities.

The opening ceremony of the Civil Engineering Week included speeches from Head of the EMU Civil Engineering Department, Prof. Dr. Ozgur Eren and Sami Alhout, member of the Construction Club. The speeches highlighted the importance of the event. After the opening addresses, Project Manager and 1994 EMU alumni Mehmet Ersan Bildiricioglu presented a seminar, providing important technical information about the construction of a third airport in Turkey. Bildiricioglu, who is working as a project manager on this project, stated that the airport is a matter of prestige for Turkey because it is set to hold the record for the largest closed area in the world. The aim is to finish the airport set to hold 150 million passengers in 2018. The airport will be the fifth largest airport in the world and will be able to accommodate the Airbus A380 which is the largest plane in the world. The cost for the construction of the airport is 10.3 billion Euros and the airport will consist of 6 strips.

Competitions Were Held

A series of competitions also took place as part of the 23rd EMU Civil Engineering Week. These competitions included building a bridge with pasta, an unbreakable egg competition and the highest Jenga skyscraper competition. Another meaningful activity took place on EMU’s South Campus, where students and academic staff planted and watered approximately 40 trees.

Prize and Certificate Ceremony Took Place

An honour and high honour certificate ceremony took place on the final day of Civil Engineering Week. The certificate ceremony got under way with speeches from Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanin, Dean of the EMU Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ozgur Eren, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Club members. Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanin thanked those involved in the organization of the 23rd Civil Engineering Week and provided information about the Engineering Faculty, its international student profile and its accreditations. Head of EMU Civil Engineering Department Prof. Dr. Ozgur Eren provided information about the department whilst thanking the Construction Club and all involved in the organization of the activities. After the speeches were completed, honour and high-honour students of the 2015-2016 Fall Academic Term were awarded their certificates. In addition, the top three students in each competition were also rewarded, as they received their certificates of achievement. The highest placed students in the concrete competition were awarded money and certificates from the sponsor Bogaz Industry and Mining (BEM) Ltd. The ceremony came to a close with live music performed by an orchestra comprising of students and a cocktail.
