EMU Ranks as the Best University of Cyprus in the World University Impact Rankings - Ranked 2nd in Turkey and in 201-300 Band Worldwide

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) continues its rapid rise in the world university rankings with another achievement. On Wednesday, 27 April 2022 at 21:00, the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE), the publisher of the world's most widely-referenced university rankings, announced the impact rankings of universities according to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. According to the said rankings, EMU raised its last year’s score of 69,4 to 79,5, moving from 301-400 band to 201-300 band this year. Thus, EMU rose two bands in the THE World Universities Impact Rankings in two years, moving from the 401-600 band to the 201-300 band. EMU, which was evaluated from 11 of the 17 United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals last year, was deemed worthy of evaluation from all 17 items this year.

First across the island, Second in Turkey

Western Sydney University from Australia was ranked the first university in the world amongst the 1,406 universities all around the world. Appearing in the highest band amongst the other 3 universities from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), EMU became the first from TRNC. On the other hand, in the list that includes 7 universities across the island of Cyprus, EMU was again in the top band and succeeded in being the best university across the island.

According to the rankings, ITU and METU appeared in the 101-200 band being listed as the first among the universities in Turkey. Continuing its rise among the Turkish universities, EMU has made it to the 201-300 along with Abdullah Gül University, Boğaziçi University, Hacettepe University, Sakarya University and Yıldız Technical University. Total of 61 universities from Turkey appeared on the list.

22nd in the world in the field of “No Poverty”

The highest rankings of EMU are in the categories of “Quality Education”, “No Poverty”, “Partnerships for the Goals” and “Reduced Inequalities”. EMU’s most successful goal this year is “No Poverty” category, as the last year. The support EMU offers to its students who are in need, the programs designed for combating poverty, social responsibility projects and studies carried out towards the 1st item in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, “No Poverty” played important role in EMU being listed as the 22nd, with a score of 82, among the other 769 universities which was entitled to be listed in the rankings. 3 universities from TRNC, 1 university from South Cyprus and 42 universities from Turkey appeared in the “No Poverty” rankings. EMU appeared at the top of the list both in TRNC and across the island as well as in Turkey.

EMU Ranks 52nd in the world in “Quality Education”

EMU ranked 52nd among 1,180 universities worldwide, ranking above the general average in the field of Quality Education. Encouraging students for lifelong learning, the rate at which EMU graduates have the competence to provide education, and the work on Quality Education, the 4th item of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, played an important role in the said outcome.

While EMU ranked first in the TRNC with its work on “Reduced Inequalities”, where only two universities from the TRNC were able to appear, Koç University and Sakarya University ranked first in Turkey among other 42 universities from Turkey. EMU shared the first band with Frederick University in the ranking across the Cyprus leaving behind the other 4 universities appearing on the list from Cyprus.

Adding more, EMU also made its way in “Partnerships for the Goals” category being ranked in the 201-300 band with a score of 78,6 showing great success by moving two bands higher from the last year’s 401-600 band. In this success, EMU's reports on the work it has carried out towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the trainings it provides, and the collaborations it has carried out to support the achievement of the UN's goals by 2030 (UN The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development) came to the fore as activities that contributed greatly to obtaining this high score. 3 universities from TRNC, 4 from South Cyprus and 63 from Turkey appear on the list in this category in which EMU ranked 1st by landslide in TRNC, 2nd in Turkey and once again 2nd in across the Cyprus.

The said list ranks world universities according to activities organized in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. UN set out 17 goals until the 2030. These goals are;

Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın thanks EMU Family

Making a statement on the topic, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın stated that EMU’s world-wide rise is a source of pride for the TRNC and noted that this success of EMU is a sign showing that EMU is taking firm steps towards its strategical goals. Expressing that EMU is proof that education in the TRNC, which is under embargo, does not recognize an embargo, Prof. Dr. Hocanın continued his words by saying: “These rankings are formed with respect to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations for 2030.
