Key Concepts and Movements in Cinema (SVTV222)

This course is principally designed to introduce students to the study of film as an academic discipline, and to encourage them to interrogate their own expectations and assumptions about film. The specific goals will be to: introduce students to the key concepts of film studies, such as narrative, genre, editing and mise en scène, and encourage them to use these terms in an informed and critically productive way; introduce students to various movements in film history in addition to theoretical concepts and methodologies which form an essential basis to subsequent Film Studies courses; encourage students to think about their viewing experience and critically question their assumptions and expectations; and introduce students to studying film in an academically disciplined manner within a range of different contexts.
