Journalist Mete Çubukçu Gives a Seminar in EMU

Doyenne journalist Mete Çubukçu, who also offers courses at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Communication, New Media and Journalism Department, gave a seminar titled “Journalism in Conflict Zones”. Journalist Mete Çubukçu shared his war correspondence experiences at the seminar held with the participation of EMU Communication Faculty students and academic staff members.

“It was Very Difficult to Deliver The News Before the New Media”

Çubukçu talked about the events he encountered in conflict zones and stated that before going to the conflict areas, it is necessary to have information about that region and to be careful in the region where they are going, according to the sensitivity of the issue. Reciting his memories of the Gulf War, Çubukçu stated that there are discursive differences between a journalist whose country is in a war and a journalist whose country is not in that war, and that in such cases, the journalist should get rid of their own identities and take on the identity of a journalist while reporting. Comparing the events that took place in Iran in 2009 with the Gulf War in terms of new media, Çubukçu said that it was very difficult to deliver the news before the new media, but now it is very fast to report on the event and deliver it, which is a convenience for journalists.

“Journalists Should Take More Responsibility”

In a statement before the seminar, EMU Communication Faculty, New Media and Journalism Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Ersoy said that they are very pleased to be bringing together the students of the department with successful journalists with high sectoral experience. Prof. Dr. Ersoy added that they are honored to have Mete Çubukçu, a doyenne journalist, as a lecturer at EMU Communication Faculty, New Media and Journalism Department. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersoy added that in our world where wars and conflicts take place, journalists covering these events should take more responsibility and make an effort to build the language of peace. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersoy concluded his statement by saying that they support the education of their students by adding such courses in their curriculum.
