EMU Commemorates Aleksandr Zabolotkov with a Chess Tournament

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Sports Affairs Directorate organized “Aleksandr Zabolotkov Chess Tournament” for EMU students at Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Complex. The tournament held in commemoration of EMU Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education academic staff member late Aleksandr Zabolotkov who sadly passed away in 2022, received great interest from the students who fiercely competed with each other.

The contestants of the tournament were divided into Category A or B, according to their levels on online chess platforms. Category A consisted of players with advanced level of chess knowledge who are experienced and professional players. On the other hand, Category B consisted of players who are new to the world of chess and are less-experienced.

Following competitive matches, Ali Doğan Nay completed the tournament in the first place in Category A, followed by Tuğra İstillozlu and Furkan Yurtal in second and third places. In Category B, Nehir Cantaş ranked the first, Atakan Topal the second and Mert Günlü the third.

“A Fantastic Setting with a Deep Sense of Friendship”

Aleksandr Zabolotkov, the son of late EMU personnel Aleksandr Zabolotkov, said, “It was a great tournament. I extend my thanks to those who have organized this event in memory of my father. The tournament had a fantastic setting with a deep sense of friendship. I began my journey at EMU in 2003, and I continued my education here through to my doctorate. Today, I am proud to serve as an academic at this university. EMU provides excellent opportunities not only in academics but also in sports. I congratulate all my friends who participated and earned top placements in the tournament”.

Following the speeches, Sports Affairs Directorate Coordinator Aydın Kayol, Sports Affairs Directorate personnel Ecevit Savaş Cankat and Aleksandr Zabolotkov, the son the late EMU personnel member Aleksandr Zabolotkov presented awards to the top-ranking particiants.
