Turkish Maarif College Wins the EMU 27th High School Mathematics Competition

Turkish Maarif College consisting of Mısra Öznur, Ömer Sarıçiçek and Serhat Bilgin completed the competition in the first place.

Organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty, Department of Mathematics with the contributions of Onal Fadıl Demirciler Education and Science Foundation, the “27th High School Mathematics Competition” final took place at EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall with the participation of audience. Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School, Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, TED Northern Cyprus College, Turkish Maarif College and 20 Temmuz High School competed during the final. Delivering a speech prior to the competition, the Chair of the Mathematics Department Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov presented information about the history of the competition, congratulated all the participating teams and thanked Onay Fadıl Demirciler Education and Science Foundation for the financial support it provides to the competition. Arts and Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan also delivered a speech where he noted that EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences is in the 201-250 band according to the field ranking made by Times Higher Education (THE), thanks to the studies and citations in the field of Mathematics and Statistics. Prof. Dr. Özarslan also underlined that this is an indicator of the quality given to education. Talking about the Department of Mathematics which operates within the body of Arts and Sciences Faculty, Prof. Dr. Özarslan provided information on the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs offered at the department. Moreover, EMU Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Aktuğlu stated that the competition is being held for the 27th time this year and that the competition is a brand in Cyprus. Prof. Dr. Aktuğlu also provided information on EMU’s place in the Times Higher Education rankings. Wishing all the finalist high schools luck, Prof. Dr. Aktuğlu completed his words by thanking the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Education and Science Foundation for their financial supports to the competition.

Following a very competitive and an exciting final round;

Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Mıra Öznur, Ömer Sarıçiçel and Serhat Bilgin under the guidance of mathematics teachers Deniz Ahçıhoca Çobanoğlu and Zehra Kavuklu Tokkan completed the competition in ‘First’ place,

Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School Team consisting of Deniz Ekinci, Esma Pekmezci and Müşerref Cemre Ünlü under the guidance of mathematics teachers Nursel Altan Andız and Derviş Topal completed the competition in ‘Second’ place,

Famagusta Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Ece Çetin, Elif Sude Bilgen and Tahir Bodi under the guidance of mathematics teachers Hüseyin Çırakoğlu and İhsan Nurluöz completed the competition in ‘Third’ place. TED Northern Cyprus College Team consisting of Ece Balık, Kayra Onurbilen and Zeynep Uzun with their mathematics teachers Fuat Ortaş and Melek Gavani completed the competition in fourth and fifth place, being awarded the ‘Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award’.

20 Temmuz High School Team consisting of Cemaliye Birinci, Rümeysa Demirtaş and Selda Koç under the guidance of mathematics teachers Haydar Haluk and Sertaş Soğancı received the ‘Assist. Prof. Dr. Kemal Demirciler Special Award’.

This year, semi-final third place winner Güzelyurt Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Fatma Nurgül Karakahraman, Kiraz Zorkun and Melek Usul under the guidance of their mathematics teachers Özlem Özyönüm Hocaoğlu and Umut Yolsal received the ‘27th Year Special Award’.

During the award ceremony held at the end of the competition, the First place winner Turkish Maarif College Team received its award from the Director of the Department of General Secondary Education Cengiz Uzun, Second place winner Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Third place winner Famagusta Turkish Maarif College by the Department of Higher Education and Foreign Relations Director Behçet Çelebi. TED Northern Cyprus Team completing the competition in fourth place received the ‘Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award’ from late Onay Fadıl Demirciler’s spouse Serpin Demirciler. On the other hand, fifth place winner 20 Temmuz High School received the ‘Assist. Prof. Dr. Kemal Demirciler Special Award’ from Onay Fadıl Demirciler’s daughter Naciye Demirciler.

Individual Competition Awards were also presented

The awards of the 27th High School Mathematics Competition’s Individual Category, held on 18 April 2023, were also presented to first place winners Deniz Ekinci (BEAL) and Mısra Öznur (TMK), second place winners Ahmet Umut Fındık (BEAL) and Serhat Bilgin (TMK), third place winner Müşerref Cemre Ünlü (BEAL), fourth place winner Esma Pekmezci (BEAL), ‘27th Year Special Award’ winner Deniz Güran (TMK), ‘Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award’ winner Ece Balık (TED Northern Cyprus College), ‘Assist. Prof. Dr. Kemal Demirciler Special Award’ winner Ece Çetin (Famagusta TMK), ‘Assoc. Prof. Dr. Peter Kas Special Award’ winner Ömer Sarıçiçek (TMK) and ‘Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daoud S. Daoud Special Award’ winner Ufuk Çağdaş Köse (BEAL). The said awards were presented to the winners by Director of the Department of General Secondary Education Cengiz Uzun, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Director of the Department of Higher Education and Foreign Relations Behçet Çelebi, EMU Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel and Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Aktuğlu, Arts and Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan, Chair of the Mathematics Department Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov, Sayman Demirciler and Naciye Demirciler.

Champion Angels were not forgotten

Champion Angels were not forgotten. Presented for the first time this year, ‘Champion Angels Special Award’ was received by Çağan Cebeci (20 Temmuz High School) and Zeynep Uzun (TED Northern Cyprus College). The students received their awards from Champion Angels Foundation Director Ruşen Yücesoylu Karakaya and executive board members Murat Aktuğralı and İhsan Nurluöz.

TMK is to hold the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Shield for a year…

This year’s first place winner Turkish Maarif College, having its name written on the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Shield for a second time, took the shield for a year to be exhibited in its building.
