Students of EMU Department of Cinema and Television Gain Hands on Experience at Antalya Film Festival

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Communication, Department of Cinema and Television students took part in a profession movie set as part of Cinematography, Script Writing, Creative Montage and, Production and Directorship in Cinema courses run by academic staff member and specialist Ömer Evre. Getting the opportunity to transfer the theoretical knowledge, they have gained throughout the semester, into practice at the set of feature-length film titled “Tuvaldaki Sır”, the students closely observed all the creative stages of cinema sector. Working with a profession team, in front of and behind the camera, the students gained significant experience, learning the dynamics of the sector.

The film’s cinematographer, Aydın Sarıoğlu, joined the students in the Cinematography class of the Cinema and Television Department, where he conveyed his technical and artistic expertise. Guided by what they learned during the course, the students were able to put their skills into practice on set, working directly with lighting, camera, and framing.

Receiving great interest with its first screening at the 62th International Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival held in Antalya, “Tuvaldaki Sır” film stood out as an unforgettable experience for EMU students, while also indicating a new chapter for the Cypriot cinema.

The film stars Cemal Hünal, Hatice Tezcan, Devrim Nas, Şahin Ergüney, Cansev Günsoy, Esin Kaya, Giorgos Anagiotos and Deniz Çakır, with Turkish Cypriot actor Osman Alkaş making a guest appearance. Produced by Altıner Dereliköylü, Biket İlhan, and Ömer Evre, and with cinematography by Aydın Sarıoğlu, the film centers on a young screenwriter who journeys to Cyprus in search of creative inspiration. While uncovering the traces of a forbidden romance from years past, he weaves an emotional connection that unites history with the present.

In the film, screenwriter Mert breathes new life into the passionate love story between painter Ayten and the young Greek Cypriot Nikos from her youth. The story goes beyond an artist’s inner quest, revealing a deep reckoning that explores the mutual pains of the island’s two communities and the healing, transformative force of forgiveness.
