Nicosia Turkish Maarif College Wins 22nd EMU High School Mathematics Competition

The final of the ‘22nd High School Mathematics Competition’ organized by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty and EMU Mathematics Department saw Bulent Ecevit Anadolu College competing with Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College and Nicosia Turkish Maarif College. The competition that was supported by the Onay Fadil Demirciler Foundation took place at EMU Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tahiroglu Blue Hall in front of a large audience. In his pre-competition speech Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov, Head of EMU Mathemathics Department stated that the primary reason for organizing this competition is to get students to like mathematics. Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov went on to congratulate all participating schools and thank the Onay Fadil Demirciler Foundation. Vice Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sozen thanked the Mathematics Department for organizing the competition before highlighting the fact that mathematics is a discipline required in many walks of life and stating that those with good mathematical knowledge are always one step ahead. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen concluded his words by wishing all the finalists good luck. The results of the exciting final are as follows:  

  • Buse Yurttutan, Cagin Sehit and Meral Oksuz finish in first for Nicosia Turkish Maarif College.
  • Dilara Demir, Emre Saricicek and Emre Saybasi finish second for Bulent Ecevit Anadolu College.
  • Ali Malyalı Coban, Ertem Karahasan ve Soykan Uzun finish third for Famagusta Turkish Maarif College.
  • Emin Sensay, Ertan Direnc ve Oktay Sekerli win ‘Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award’ for Güzelyurt Turkish Maarif College.

This year, Mathematics Department’s 22nd Year Special Prize was awarded to 19 Mayis Turkish Maarif College team comprising of Feride Coksu, Nese Buyuk and Seniha Aksoylu and 20 Temmuz Science College team comprising of Ceren Tokus, Gizem Cakir and Seren Yorulmaz.

After the competition the awards were handed to the winners, Nicosia Turkish Maarif College by Vice Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, second place Bulent Ecevit Anadolu College by Dean of the Arts and Sciences Faculty, Prof. Dr. Rza Bashirov, third place Famagusta Turkish Maarif College by the Chair of the Mathematics Department, Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov. Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College team who finished fourth were handed the ‘Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award’ by Onay Fadil Demirciler’s wife Serpin Demirciler. Finally, 19 Mayis Turkish Maarif College and the 20 Temmuz Science College both received the Mathematics Department 22nd Year Special Award from the Chair of the Mathematics Department, Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov.

Individual Awards also Handed Out

 The awards for the individual category of the 22nd High School Mathematics Competition that took place on the 14th of April 2016 were also handed out to the winner Cagin Sehit (Nicosia Turkish Maarif College), the runner-ups Emre Saybasi (Bulent Ecevit Anadolu College) and Meral Oksuz (Nicosia Turkish Maarif College) and the third position Soykan Uzun (Famgusta Turkish Maarif College) by Vice Rector of EMU Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, Dean of the Arts and Sciences Faculty, Prof. Dr. Rza Bashirov and Chair of the Mathematics Department, Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov. Buse Yurttutan (Nicosia Turkish Maarif College), Dilara Demir (Bulent Ecevit Anadolu College) and Ertan Direnc (Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College) shared the ‘Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award’. They were handed their prizes from the daughter of the late Fadil Demirciler, Naciye Demirciler. Lastly, Nese Buyuk (19 Mayis Turkish Maarif College) who won the Mathematics Department’s 22nd Year Special Award was handed her prize by Vice Dean of the Arts and Sciences Faculty Assistant Prof. Dr. Mehmet Bozer.
