Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Law hosted Şeref Malkoç, Chief Ombudsman of the Republic of Turkey Ombudsman Institution and Turkish Ombudsman. Delivering the opening speeches of the conference, EMU Faculty of Law Dean Prof. Dr. Turgut Turhan and EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın drew attention to the importance of the concept of ombudsman. Şeref Malkoç, who provided information about the work of the Ombudsman Institution since its inauguration, talked about the operation and goals of the institution. Malkoç stated that the culture of claiming rights has developed in Turkey and that the citizens’ trust towards ombudsman mechanism is increasing day by day with their work. Emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and having the freedom to seek rights before the administration, Malkoç stated that the public now trusts this mechanism that works and that they have a transparent platform where they can submit their complaints to the institution easily, free of charge and anonymously, without going to the courts. Emphasizing justice throughout his speech, Malkoç stated that he was happy to meet with the representatives of the future. Students showed great interest in the conference attended by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel and Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Turgut Turhan.
Visit to Prof. Dr. Hocanın before the Conference
Before the conference, Şeref Malkoç visited EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın in his office. Expressing that students will be presented with a very beneficial conference, Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın emphasized that Public Inspection is a very important institution and that it is a profession that has important duties in solving problems. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also stated that EMU attaches great importance to joint projects, collaboration and sharing of information with all institutions of the Republic of Turkey. Providing information about higher education in the TRNC and EMU, Prof. Dr. Hocanın concluded his speech by expressing his gratitude and appreciation for the Malkoç's visit to EMU.
Şeref Malkoç started his speech by expressing that he is happy to be at EMU and stated that EMU is the pioneer of universities in Cyprus. Malkoç added that he attended the ceremonies held for the 10th anniversary of Founding President Rauf Raif Denktaş's demise during his visit to the TRNC and added that Denktaş was an important leader who had a meaningful and important place in the struggle for rights and freedom as he devoted his life to his nation, fought for the rule of law and achieved success. Mentioning that he also held meetings with the government officials, Malkoç stated that they exchanged views on international law and Cyprus during their visit.
At the end of the visit, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın and the Republic of Turkey Chief Ombudsman Şeref Malkoç mutually presented gifts to each other.
