Award-Winning Analytical Chemistry Professor Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak Gives a Seminar in EMU

11th International Career Days, organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Alumni Communication and Career Research Directorate (MIKA) in cooperation with faculties and schools, continued with EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Physics and Chemistry Departments. British Royal Academy of Sciences Chemistry Society Consulting Member, Turkish Academy of Sciences Full Member and TÜBİTAK Science Award Winner Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak gave a seminar to the students of EMU Physics and Chemistry Departments. Prof. Dr. Apak, one of Turkey's most famous Analytical Chemistry Professors, also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Istanbul University and the Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences.

The Seminar Garnered Great Interest

Delivering the opening speech of the seminar, EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ozarslan, expressed his pleasure that a very important scientist like Prof. Dr. Apak has come to EMU to give a seminar. Then Prof. Dr. Apak gave his speech titled “Principles of Sensor and Nanosensor Design for Analytical Applications”. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak, a prominent scientist not only successful in conveying information, also impressed the audience with his general level of knowledge, deep love for his field, communication with the audience and especially his ability to speak in two languages ​​(both English and Turkish).  Prof. Dr. Apak also provided information on "Practical Advice for Postgraduate Students in Chemistry". Attracting a lot of attention with his speech, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak carefully listened and responded to those who asked him questions. At the end of the talk, EMU Physics and Chemistry Department Chair Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı, presented of a plaque of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Mustafa Reşat Apak.

Prof. Dr. Reşat Apak has been working as a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Istanbul University for 29 years. He is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Istanbul University and the Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. He was the director of the Analytical Chemistry Department and the Food Antioxidants Application and Research Center at the same university. He is currently working under the research and teaching contract jointly provided by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the IUC Rectorate. He is currently the representative of Turkey in IUPAC: International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Department of Analytical Chemistry as the most senior member. Prof. Dr. Apak is the author of 306 peer-reviewed research papers, 17 book chapters and reviews, three textbooks and one textbook on antioxidant analysis. He has authored 9 articles in the most influential experimental analytical sciences journal and 1 article in ACS-Sensors. In addition to being a principal member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA), Prof. Dr. Apak is a Consultant Member of the British Royal Academy of Sciences Chemistry Society (RSC). He is also the owner of the TÜBİTAK Science Award, Turkey's most prestigious science award, for his contribution to Chemistry Science. Prof. Dr. Apak is the inventor of the CUPRAC antioxidant capacity determination method, and his two leading articles have received more than 3,700 citations. He also produced the first Turkish multi-explosive detection test kit in the field. During the 2020-22 pandemic years, when most lecturers could not come to their offices in person, Prof. Dr. Apak has shown that he is a Scientist who should be taken as an example by keeping his laboratories open to all undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students from all over Turkey and publishing 54 research articles.
