Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç released a commemoratory message on the 42nd passing anniversary of Dr. Fazıl Küçük, the leader of existence and struggle of Turkish Cypriot community. The said message reads as follows:
“On the 42nd anniversary of his passing, we remember Dr. Fazıl Küçük, a key leader in the Turkish Cypriot people’s fight for existence and freedom, with deep respect and gratitude.
Playing a pivotal role in the independence movement of our community, Dr. Küçük was especially committed to safeguarding the rights of the Turkish community. He led the Turkish Cypriots in their struggle for freedom, equality, and a dignified life. Devoting his life to protecting his people’s rights and preserving their culture and identity, Dr. Küçük remained steadfast and resilient in the face of all challenges.
Dr. Fazıl Küçük made significant contributions to defending the rights of Turkish Cypriots during the British rule in Cyprus. As the founder of the Cyprus Turkish National Party, he played a crucial role in the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1959. Furthermore, he served as the first Vice President of the Republic, providing dedicated service to his people until 1973.
Dr. Fazıl Küçük was a committed advocate for his people, leading their struggle and guiding the Turkish Cypriots on their path to independence. In addition to his role as a prominent politician, he was a source of inspiration as a physician and journalist. His principles, vision, and unwavering determination laid the groundwork for the advancement and success of the Turkish Cypriot community.
The legacy he entrusted to us, grounded in democracy, peace, social unity, and modern principles, continues to guide us today. Safeguarding and conveying these values to future generations is both a historical obligation and a matter of conscience. As Eastern Mediterranean University, we always honor Dr. Fazıl Küçük’s vision, his lifelong struggle, and the lasting contributions he made to the Turkish Cypriot community, while striving to sustain his ideals through science, education, and social progress. On this occasion, we once again remember Dr. Fazıl Küçük with respect and reverence, reaffirming our commitment to advancing along the path he illuminated.”
