Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), consistently ranked among the best universities globally by various international independent ranking bodies, has once again achieved a phenomenal success.
On Tuesday, 18 November 2025, EMU was ranked within the 51-75 band globally in Hospitality and Tourism Management category in the China-based Shanghai Ranking’s 2025 World University Academic Rankings. Furthermore, the university earned a score of 18.2 out of 20 in the “Research Impact” category, placing 12th in the world for this field.
EMU - Top University in the Island in the Field of Hospitality and Tourism Management
EMU is the sole university from both the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Republic of Türkiye to be featured in this ranking for Hospitality and Tourism Management, and it secured the top position on the island of Cyprus. The ranking evaluated about 2,000 universities out of a total of 5,000 institutions worldwide from 100 countries. Moreover, EMU is among the only university from Türkiye and Cyprus that has been consistently ranked in the field of Hospitality and Tourism Management since 2019.
Ranked 12th Globally in “Research Impact” Category
In the 2025 Shanghai Ranking’s World University Academic Ranking, EMU was assessed across key categories, including “World-Class Faculty”, “World-Class Output”, “High-Quality Research”, “Research Impact”, and “International Collaboration”. The university’s ranking was determined based on its academic publications in top global journals (Q1), international academic awards, citations (excluding self-citations), and its academic partnerships with institutions worldwide, covering a period of 5 years.
Consistently making our country proud with its scholarly achievements, EMU secured 12th place globally in the “Research Impact” category for Hospitality and Tourism Management, with a score of 18.2 out of 20. Adding more, in “International Collaboration” category, EMU was featured among top 17 universities around the world, receiving a score of 9 out of 10, thanks to its international collaborations carried out in the field of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
EMU achieved within top 54 globally in the Hospitality and Tourism Management field with a score of 31.0 in the “High-Quality Research” category. It also secured a global ranking in 68th place in the “World-Class Output” category with a score of 27.1. Making remarks on the university’s achievements, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç said; “Our university has once again secured the top position in Hospitality and Tourism Management across both Cyprus and Türkiye, just as it does each year. This achievement stems from our faculty’s publications in high-impact academic journals, the strong citation performance of these works, and the research produced through international collaborations. With 1,096 students and distinguished faculty members, our Faculty of Tourism—offering associate, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs in Tourism Management; associate, undergraduate, and master’s programs in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts; and an associate program in Civil Aviation Cabin Services—has once again made us proud by maintaining its standing on the global stage. Shanghai Ranking began releasing world university rankings by academic subject in 2009, and after updating its methodology, introduced the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) in 2017. The 2025 GRAS evaluates universities in 57 subjects within the areas of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
