Culture, Language and Translation Problems (TRAN218)

This course presents examples of a number of potential problems that translators can encounter in the profession. The course includes an overview of the essential structure of language and the relationship between language and culture; Turkish and English word structure as they affect translation issues; lexical structure in English, particularly hyponymy and synonymy; translation problems caused by syntactic differences between Turkish and English; translation types and procedures; and a range of miscellaneous issues, such as translating humor, metaphor, punctuation. The students are also encouraged to share with the class members the examples of the translation problems they themselves have encountered.
