Violence Against Women Discussed in EMU

Organised by the Psychology Club operating under the Eastern Mediterranean University Social and Cultural Activities Directorate, a conference titled “The Gender System and Violence against Girls & Women” took place at Faculty of Law LA2 Amphi on Thursday, 7 November 2019. The speaker of the event was EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Psychology Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şenel Hüsnü Raman. Stating that most societies have a patriarchal, male dominated structure, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raman put forth that according to UNIFEM data, 60% of the world's female population will be subjected to violence throughout their lives, and the said forms of violence include physical, sexual, psychological violence, murder of women, women trafficking or forced marriage at an early age. The conference also hosted discussions on how societies normalize and ignore these violent incidents due to gender norms.
