TOLES Excitement at EMU: International Participation Draws Attention

The Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES), a UK-based examination for legal professionals and translators working in the legal field, was held at the Eastern Mediterranean University Continuous Education Center (EMU-CEC) in the Conference Hall of the EMU Özay Oral Library. A total of 26 candidates sat the examination, including students from the EMU Faculty of Law and the Department of Translation and Interpretation, as well as two lawyers from Türkiye and one lawyer from Russia.

EMU: Türkiye and Northern Cyprus’ First Registered TOLES Examination Centre

Eastern Mediterranean University, recognized as the first accredited TOLES examination center in Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has been delivering TOLES training programs and administering the examinations with professionalism and consistency since 2012. The examination results are expected to be released within six to eight weeks.

Ata İŞSEVER – 4th Year Student at EMU Faculty of Law

Sharing his views on the TOLES examination, Ata İşsever stated that the TOLES training he received as part of his legal education has made a significant contribution to his ability to understand foreign contracts and legislation, enabling him to analyze international legal texts with greater confidence. Noting that he plans to pursue an international career after graduation, İşsever emphasized that the TOLES certificate differs from general English proficiency examinations such as IELTS and TOEFL by specifically assessing Legal English, making it particularly valuable for aspiring legal professionals. He further explained that the program not only enhanced his Legal English skills but also strengthened his overall English proficiency, while providing valuable insight into different legal systems and equipping him with the ability to communicate effectively with international clients. Commenting on the TOLES examination, Ceren Kesgin stated that the TOLES training offered at EMU has made a significant contribution to the development of her Legal English skills, particularly by enhancing her ability to understand international legal texts and unfamiliar legal terminology. She noted that the TOLES certificate provides a valuable competitive advantage in her professional career and added that its lifetime validity further increases its value. Kesgin also remarked that while general English proficiency has become a fundamental requirement today, Legal English is what truly distinguishes legal professionals. Recommending the TOLES program to law students, she described it as both educational and enriching, adding that it offers participants a broader perspective on the legal profession. Reflecting on her experience at EMU, Kesgin highlighted the expertise of the academic staff and the high quality of education, stating that Eastern Mediterranean University provides an outstanding learning environment.

Erdinç Adanalı

Erdinç ADANALI - 4th Year Student at EMU Faculty of Law

Erdinç Adanalı stated that the TOLES training he received at EMU has significantly enhanced his knowledge of Legal English, particularly by strengthening his ability to understand legal texts and contracts. He explained that his primary motivation for taking the TOLES examination was to certify his Legal English proficiency through an internationally recognized qualification. Adanalı, who aims to practice law in Northern Cyprus, noted that such a qualification would provide a valuable advantage within a legal system based on English law. Emphasizing that English is an essential skill not only for the legal profession but for everyday life, he added that internationally recognized program such as TOLES offer valuable opportunities for law students and recommended the program to others pursuing a career in law.

Commenting on the TOLES examination, Zerin Avcın stated that the TOLES training goes beyond everyday English proficiency and makes a significant contribution to professional development. She noted that the program has greatly improved her ability to understand and interpret legal texts, while also providing her with valuable insight into the English legal system. Avcın explained that, after completing the two-semester program, she took the examination to earn an internationally recognized certificate reflecting her Legal English proficiency. She added that she aspires to work as a legal translator in law firms, international companies, and professional translation agencies, and believes that the TOLES certificate will be a valuable asset in her career. Emphasizing that the TOLES program not only teaches legal terminology but also equips participants with the skills to accurately understand and use English in an international legal context, Avcın recommended the program to all students interested in the field. Reflecting on her four years at EMU, she expressed her satisfaction with her educational experience, highlighting the expertise of the academic staff and the supportive social environment, both of which played an important role in preparing her for her future profession.
