Students of EMU Develop a “Smart Walking Stick System”

Students of Eastern Mediterranean University, Engineering Faculty, Computer Engineering Department are required to complete their graduation projects carried out within the last two semesters of their studies in order to fulfill their graduation conditions. The said projects are developed in line with the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) criteria.

Within this framework, Remzi Metehan Tekin, Melih Şenuzun and Belkız Yılmaz’s joint project focusing on a “Smart Walking Stick System” received the best project certificate among the projects carried out during the 2015-2016 Academic Year.

The said students presented their graduation projects to their advisor Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ünveren, Department Chair Prof. Dr. Işık Aybay and Dean of Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın.

The smart walking stick prototype developed by the said group of students senses the approaching barriers and produces signals in different frequencies depending of the distance to the said obstruction.  The smart walking stick also sends messages to a family member or a friend about the location of the visually impaired person through a GPS device.
