EMU-URDC Brings Italian Architects Together with Students and Academics

A seminar entitled “Sustainability Applied at Every Scale” was held under the organization of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Urban Research and Development Center (URDC), featuring Giulia Bertolucci and Rodolfo Collodi, partners at the Italy-based architectural firm Studio AxS – Architettura x Sostenibilità, as guest speakers.

Moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ege Uluca Tümer, a faculty member of the EMU Faculty of Architecture, the seminar brought together students and academic staff to explore ecological architectural approaches that integrate sustainability into design processes at various scales. Bertolucci and Collodi shared insights into the design of healthy, safe, and energy-efficient buildings, as well as sustainable strategies for the renovation and improvement of existing building stock.

The speakers also provided information on ecological approaches to new construction, environmentally responsible renovation methods, and practices aimed at improving the energy performance of buildings. Particular emphasis was also placed on strategies designed to reduce energy consumption while enhancing indoor comfort and overall building performance.

Sustainable Architectural Practices Highlighted Through Real-World Projects

During the seminar, examples of completed projects designed by Studio AxS were presented to demonstrate how sustainability principles are translated into architectural practice. The presentations also highlighted the importance of responsible material use, energy efficiency, and the adoption of long-term, resilient approaches to the design and transformation of the built environment.

The interactive question-and-answer session of the seminar, students and academic staff had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the speakers on sustainable design, building renovation strategies, energy efficiency, and architectural practice. Bertolucci and Collodi responded to the questions, sharing their professional experiences and perspectives.

The seminar fostered the exchange of knowledge and experience between architectural education and professional practice, offering participants valuable insights into the practical applications of sustainability in architecture. The event also underscored the roles and responsibilities of architects and interior architects in creating healthier, more environmentally responsible, and energy-efficient built environments.
