Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç issued a statement on 25 November - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In the said statement, Prof. Dr. Kılıç called on the entire EMU community and the wider public to view the defence of women’s right to life and dignity as a core human obligation. The full statement reads as follows:
“Today, on the 25th of November, recognized as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we once again reaffirm our strong opposition to all types of violence. Violence targeting women continues to be one of humanity’s most pressing challenges. The fact that millions of women worldwide endure various forms of physical, emotional, economic, and other types of abuse highlights the critical importance of this fight. Such violence is not only a personal offense but also a profound humanitarian issue that undermines social harmony, justice, and fundamental human rights.
Eastern Mediterranean University remains committed to promoting educational and research initiatives that enhance gender equality awareness, enforcing safety-focused policies for our students and employees, fostering both internal and external cooperation in the fight against violence, and persistently striving to ensure that women can participate in every aspect of life as independent, equal, and empowered individuals.
We understand that schools and universities go beyond being centers of learning—they play a leading role in building a just and equitable society. Guided by this sense of responsibility, we oppose any behaviour or mind-set that tolerates, overlooks, or legitimizes violence.
I call on the entire EMU community and the wider public to view the defence of women’s right to life and dignity as a core human obligation. Just as we do today, we will keep standing against violence and supporting solidarity and equality in the future.
On this occasion, we pay tribute to all women who have lost their lives due to violence and sincerely thank everyone who courageously stands up against it.”
