Journalism Practices in New Media Environment (YMGA218)

Contemporary journalistic reporting and various forms of reporting in social arena cannot be studied independently from the rise of digital technology, the convergence of media, the Internet. This course argues the new role of the reporter and social media users in considerations of the impact of new media technologies on journalistic and other practices. In the course some questions will be analyzed such as “Does the human figure of the reporter remains central to the generation of meaning in new media reporting contexts”. What are the professional skills and qualities expected from the combined with technological validation? What are the impacts of changing relations of space and time in mobile cultures? Following those, this course draws out the dynamic contours of a new relationship between news reporters and new social media environments. Modules covering such issues as making news politics and economics, sport journalism, sports broadcasting, magazine journalism, investigative journalism, health journalism, forensic journalism, and interpretive reporting in the new media are introduced.
