Introduction to Journalism (YMGA105)

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the profession of journalism. The students taking this introductory course will learn and understand the fundamental elements of journalism. A variety of issues related to journalism with the understanding of historical development of journalism will be discussed. The students completing the course will have a basic understanding about journalism, news, news values, sources, news selection, news writing, and ethical values. Topics to be covered are: the mission of journalism; journalism as truth-telling; journalism and the public; verification; journalism as the fourth estate; journalists and their sources; journalism as a public forum; news values; basic elements of news; techniques of news writing; techniques of news interviewing.
