Film Semiotics (SVTV422)

This course is predominantly planned to introduce students to the study of signs as they relate to film on a variety of levels. The specific goals will be to: introduce students the semiotic theory which focuses on the social and cultural meaning of signs and codes, and to introduce the basic film semioticians such as Umberto Eco, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Christian Metz, Roland Barthes etc. This course will be useful for students in terms of learning useful analytical tool for studying the ways in which visual images construct a system for the communication of meaning.
