Energy Research Center
EMU Energy Research Centre focus on the exploration, development and efficient use of alternative and environment-friendly energy sources, power generation, development of energy policies, energy planning and energy economics. The activities of the center fall into three areas of expertise, the outcome of which are complementary to each other. These are research, education and application. The center places special emphasis on increasing the energy efficiency awareness and working closely with the industry. The objective is to have a leading role in using the conventional energy sources more efficiently, discovering cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, shedding light on their applications and helping their acknowledgement by the public. The center proposes new legislations concerning the energy issues in order to facilitate the application of the outcomes of the research work to everyday life. Development of the renewable energy systems, diversifying their application areas, reuse of the waste energy, reducing environmental pollution, energy use in water treatment and energy management issues are amongst the research topics of the center.
Eastern Mediterranean University is well equipped with experts and facilities to execute energy projects both at the national and international levels. Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), Hotel Sector Electricity Demand Project (HoDeP), Energy Survey of Bursa Textile Sector (ESBuTex) and small-scale wind turbine design are some projects undertaken by the center. Recently, there has been participation in the USAID funded Resource Efficiency Achievement Project (REAP). REAP is a two year project, undertaken by CORE International Inc., which is aimed at promoting energy and water consumption efficiency and, in turn, improving the competitiveness, financial status and quality of the services and products of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Northern Cyprus. The project will also strengthen the capability of local energy service companies to deliver efficiency services and install efficiency equipment.
In the short-term strategic plan, the center envisage activities for improving the supply of electricity, exploring the possibility of diversifying the renewable energy sources in the energy mix and increasing the energy awareness in the commercial and industrial sectors for Northern Cyprus. The organization of a panel session in January 2006 on the “best investment programs for the short-term energy policies of Northern Cyprus” and the recent involvement in the REAP were intended to meet some of the goals set in the strategic plan.
