Turkey’s Nicosia Ambassador Derya Kanbay Visits EMU

Derya Kanbay, Nicosia ambassador for the Turkish Republic visited the Eastern Mediterranean University on Wednesday the 27th of June 2016 at 15:00. Ambassador Kanbay met up with the Board of Trustees and their president Mehmet Bayram, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam and his vice rectors at the EMU Rector’s Office. During the visit Kanbay spoke about the recent events in Turkey and the effects they could have on North Cyprus. During his visit to EMU, Ambassador Kanbay was joined by Engin Karabas, Expert Consultant for Turkey’s Nicosia Embassy Aid Committee.

During his visit, Ambassador Kanbay was provided extensive information about EMU by EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam. Prof. Dr. Osam noted that in its 37th year EMU has approximately 20 thousand students from 106 different countries. Prof. Dr. Osam went onto state that EMU is an international university which greatly values international accreditation. He also provided a reminder that an EMU diploma is valid everywhere in the world. Regarding the attempted coup in Turkey on the 15th July, Prof. Dr. Osam stated that the developments were sad and troubling. Prof. Dr. Osam condemned the attack on Turkish democracy whilst conveying his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Kanbay who visited EMU for the first time stated that he really liked the university which he called ‘North Cyprus’s source of pride’. In addition, he noted that he is following the positive developments within the university. The meeting also involved an exchange of views on topics such as the institutionalisation of Turkish Cypriot universities, collaboration between Turkish and Turkish Cypriot universities and how to increase the worldwide identifiability of Turkish Cypriot universities.
