Famagusta Turkish Maarif College Wins the 23rd EMU High School Mathematics Competition

The Famagusta Turkish Maarif College team consisting of Arda Hepgüler, Elmaziye Ramazan and Mehmet Çağmel came first.

The finals of the ‘23rd High Schools Mathematics Competition’, which was organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty, Mathematics Department with the support of the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Education and Science Foundation, was completed at EMU Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tahiroğlu Hall. The said competition took place amongst Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, Nicosia Turkish Maarif College, Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School and 19 May Turkish Maarif College in front of a large audience. EMU Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov, who gave a speech prior to the competition, provided information about the history of the competition and congratulated all participating schools. Prof. Dr. Mahmudov also thanked the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Education and Science Foundation for their financial support. EMU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı also delivered a speech, thanking the Mathematics Department for organizing this successful competition for 23 years. Prof. Dr. Özkaramanlı congratulated the teams who made it to the finals and wished them good luck.

As for the results of an exciting and competitive final,

  • Famagusta Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Arda Hepgüler, Elmaziye Ramazan and Mehmet Çağmel took ‘First Place’,
  • Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School Team consisting of Cennet Kaçucam, Onur Enes Gündoğdu and Ömer Faruk Alp took ‘Second Place’,
  • Nicosia Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Ahmet Harper, Ercem Yeşil and Selin Semin took ‘Third Place’, and
  • 19 May Turkish Maarif College Team consisting of Ceren Erdoğan, Oğuz Yıldırım and Pelinsu Hakalmaz took ‘Fourth Place’, winning the ‘Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award’.

Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School

The 20 July Science High School Team comprising of Açelya Özata, Kâmil Koca and Serkan Arslan came second in the semi-finals and was awarded the 23rd Year Special Award

The awards were presented by; EMU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı to the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College for first place, EMU Arts and Sciences Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan to the Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School Team for second place and EMU Mathematics Department Chairman Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov to the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College Team for third place. 19 May Turkish Maarif College Team who won the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award by taking the fourth place in the competition, received their award by Onay Fadıl Demirciler’s wife Serpin Demirciler, and the 20 July Science High School Team who won the 23rd Year Special Award received their award from EMU Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov.

Guest of Honor-1996 Graduate Necmi Şerbetcioğlu

A plaque of honor was awarded to 1996 Department of Mathematics graduate, guest of honor Necmi Şerbetcioğlu for being one of the two individuals who came up with the idea of the High School Mathematics Competition in 1995. Şerbetcioğlu is currently a Planning Director at Shell Oil Company. During his short speech Şerbetcioğlu expressed his happiness regarding being invited to the competition, thanking the Department of Mathematics and describing a few fond memories from when he was a student at the department.

Individual Awards also presented

On the 12th of April 2017 Arda Hepgüler from Famagusta Turkish Maarif College and Ercem Yeşil from Nicosia Turkish Maarif College came joint first in the individual category of the 23rd High School Mathematics Competition. Sermet Ersöz from Famagusta Turkish Maarif College came second and Ahmet Harper from Nicosia Turkish Maarif College came third. They were presented their awards by EMU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı, Arts and Science Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan and former Arts and Science Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Rza Bashirov. Ömer Faruk Alp (Bulent Ecevit Anatolian High School) came fourth and was awarded the 23rd Year Special Award. Finally, Kâmil Koca (20 July Science High School) came fifth and was awarded the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Special Award. They were presented their awards by Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov and Onay Fadıl Demirciler’s wife Serpin Demirciler. At the end of the Award Ceremony Famagusta Turkish Maarif College were presented the Onay Fadıl Demirciler Shield by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı and Serpin Demirciler.

Up-To-Date Onay Fadıl Demirciler Shield Statistics

The Onay Fadıl Demirciler Shield was set up in 2014, to last for a period of five years. The shield was won by the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College twice; in 2014 and 2016. Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School won the shield in 2015 and the Turkish Maarif College in 2017. The permanent owner of the shield will be determined next year.
