Experimental Cinema Workshop in EMU Communication Faculty

One of the leading names in experimental cinema in Turkey, Nurşen Bakır, delivered a two-day workshop at Eastern Mediterranean Univesity Communication Faculty. Organised by Radio-TV, Cinema and Journalism Department, the “Experimental Cinema Workshop” was delivered in Turkish and English.

Nurşen Bakır also delivered a workshop on experimental documentary during last December. Outcomes of last and this year’s workshops will be displayed in the 2nd International Fone Film Festival which will takep place in EMU Communication Faculty between 29 and 30 May.

During the workshop, Bakır  recommended the students to listen to their own voices and find out the methods they can express themselves. Stating that cinema is a collective business, Bakır  added that cooperation needed in the cinema sector.

In her evaluation of the workshop, EMU Communication Faculty, Radio-TV, Cinema and Journalism Department chair Assist. Prof. Dr. Pembe Behçetoğulları stated that environments as such provides students with an intensive interactive learning environment as it is prescriptive and conversive. Behçetoğulları also put forth that as Nurşen Bakır stated films do not have to be produced by using only one single method. Successful film makers are those who produce films by using different methods.

Born in İznik in 1962, Nurşen Bakır, a specialist on experimental films and documentaries, interrupted her education at Hacettepe University Philosophy Department and commenced her studies in the films industry in the USA. In 1991, she completed her undergraduate studies at City University of New York and in 2002, she obtained a master’s degree from San Francisco State University. Bakır  was involved in the production of numerous documentaries and worked with American and Dutch film-makers. She worked as a faculty member at Bilgi University Film and TV Department. Bakır is currently work on documentaries produced by Sine-Yol.  Among her famous productions are Karık (2013), Bitmeyen Yolculuk (2011), Köyü Kaybettik (2011), Yola Düştük (2011) and Tekel (2010).
