EMU XIII Sand Sculpture Festival and Contest Provided Colourful Moments for Participants

The 13th annual Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Sand Sculpture Festival and Competition took place at EMU Beach Club on Sunday the 13th of October 2019 between 10:00 – 18:00. As always, the event was organized by the EMU Architecture Faculty, Interior Architecture Department in collaboration with the EMU Design Club.

The annual festival and contest which has become a highly anticipated event amongst the Cypriot community also included the participation of EMU Vice Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu Oğurlu, Architecture Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek and Department of Interior Architecture Chair Prof. Dr. Uğur Dağlı.

They Exhibited Their Creativity

At the end of the exciting event the groups “Creativity for Change”, “Dracarys”, “Plutonians”, “Break Point” and “Turtles” were deemed worthy of receiving awards. The groups “Artemisia”, “Denizlerimizi Koruyalım” (Let’s Protect Our Seas) and “Jeddah Team” were also praised by the jury.

This year’s jury was comprised EMU Department of Interior Architecture Chair Prof. Dr. Uğur Ulaş Dağlı, Department of Interior Architecture Academic Staff Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kağan Günçe, Department of Architecture Academic Staff Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Ceren Boğaç, Department of Interior Architecture Senior Instructor Mustafa Dinsev, EMU Design Club representative Mustafa Demirel, Near East University Senior Instructor Özge Mercan, Cyprus International University Senior Instructor Didem Çelik, Final International University Academic Staff Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Soad Abdokhamis Mousavi,  European University of Lefke Academic Staff Member Asst. Prof. Dr. Makbule Oktay and Yaşar University Academic Staff Member Prof. Dr. Hakan Ertep.

The festival held on Famagusta’s fabulous coast was made more colourful with the participation of students from universities throughout the TRNC. The festival which allows participants to get involved in alternate activities by taking advantage of the country’s natural beauty presents the perfect platform for everyone to have fun and boost their creativity. The festival was also a good welcoming activity for new university students who recently arrived on the island.

Groups participating in the competition made their sculptures in designated sections whilst enjoying the beach and lovely weather. Participants also danced to lively music played by a DJ.
