EMU Organised an Event Entitled “The Future with Developed and Transformed Youth”

Eastern Mediterranean University organised an event entitled “The Future with Developed and Transformed Youth” for high school final year students at Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center on 17 April 2015. The event which took place under the moderatorship of EMU TV News Speaker Çiğdem Duvarcı hosted EMU Psychological Counseling, Guidance and Research Center chair Prof. Dr. Biran Mertan, EMU-PDRAM Psychiatrist Dr. Mehmet Yağlı, EMU-PDRAM Senior Psychiatrists Fatoş Özeylem and Özlem Güler, EMU Arts and Sciences Faculty, Mathematics Department academic staff member and chair of the Exam Commission Assist. Prof. Dr. Nidai Şemi and EMU Arts and Sciences Faculty, Mathematics Department academic staff member and Rector’s Office Coordinator for Academic Affairs Assist. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Etikan.

Namık Kemal High School, Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, İskele Bekirpaşa High School and Erenköy High School final year students took part in the activity with their counseling teachers. The first speaker Prof. Dr. Mertan stated that EMU – PDRAM provides support to students in different areas. Prof. Dr. Mertan stressed the importance of psychological strength, productive study methods, personal development, taking the initiative, self-control, healthy interpersonal relationships, personality development, strong communication skills, creativity and self confidence.

EMU-PDRAM senior psychiatrist Fatoş Özeylem talked about the adolescence period and stated that during this period a lot of questions emerge in the individual’s brain such as “What kind of person am I?”, “Which subjects am I good at?”, “What do other people think about me?”, “What kind of life do I want?” and “Which field should I choose for my university studies?”. Özeylem provided methods and techniques for dealing with questions as such. In her speech, senior psychiatrist Özlem Güler talked about stress, levels of stress, positive and negative effects of stress in our lives and ways of dealing with stress.

Assist. Prof. Dr. Nidai Şemi and Assist. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Etikan provided detailed information about Eastern Mediterranean University. Assist. Prof. Dr. Şemi stressed the importance of regular study in students’ academic success and added that those students who establish a balance between social life and studying will definitely pursue success. EMU- PDRAM psychiatrist Dr. Mehmet Yağlı talked about the importance of domestic communication especially during the period when the individuals are trying to decide about their future. Dr. Yağlı also provided examples for the effective management of difficult situations.
