EMU Medical Biotechnology Master’s Program Receives ASIIN Accreditation

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Medical Biotechnology Master’s program has successfully received Germany-based ASIIN Accreditation. ASIIN (Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Mathematics) is an international organisation that oversees education programs in engineering, mathematics, informatics and natural sciences.

The ASIIN delegation, who paid a visit to EMU for the accreditation evaluation purposes, carried out the evaluation by considering criteria including education - training, research - development, infrastructure and facilities, laboratories, competencies of the faculty members, student satisfaction and graduate output. Within the framework of the inspection process, the infrastructural possibilities of the University, Faculty and Department were examined on site.

EMU Biological Sciences Department Chair Prof. Dr. Bahar Taneri stated that the program started its academic life in 2019 upon the approval of Turkish Higher Education Council (YÖK). Prof. Dr. Bahar Taneri added it is extremely important that as a one-year, non-thesis master's program, which offers a curriculum complying with the international standards, the Medical Biotechnology program has been evaluated and accredited by ASIIN. Prof. Dr. Taneri also put forth that in addition theoretical courses in the program such as the basics of medical biotechnology, molecular genetics, vaccines and immunity, assisted reproductive technologies, epigenetics and human diseases, and drug development, students develop themselves in molecular techniques in laboratories.

Making a statement on the subject, Dean of EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan stated that the Faculty attaches great importance to international membership and accreditations. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan added that the department underwent the ASIIN evaluation process in September 2021 and has successfully completed this process. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan also stressed that this remarkable achievement is an indication of the high standards of EMU Faculty of Arts and Sciences in academic staff, infrastructure and the quality of education provided.
