EMU is Represented in One of the Most Reputable Physics Journal

Eastern Mediterranean University, Arts and Sciences Faculty, Physics Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı and PhD student Gülnihal Tokgöz published an article in one of the oldest physics journals of the world called Annalen der Physik (Annals of Physics) during the first days of 2016. Entitled “Spectroscopy of rotating linear dilaton black holes from boxed quasinormal modes” (DOI:10.1002/andp.201500305), the article has the distinct quality of being the first Cyprus addressed (including South Cyprus Greek Side) research on General Relativity published in Annalen der Physik Journal, which was established in 1790.

In their study, Sakallı and Tokgöz state that numerical studies of the coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon system have recently revealed that confined scalar fields generically collapse to form caged black holes. In the light of this finding, the researchers analytically study the characteristic resonance spectra of the confined scalar fields in rotating linear dilaton black hole geometry. Confining mirrors (cage) are assumed to be placed in the near-horizon region of a caged rotating linear dilaton black hole inline image. The radial part of the Klein-Gordon equation is written as a Schrödinger-like wave equation, which reduces to a Bessel differential equation around the event horizon. Using analytical tools and proper boundary conditions, they obtained the boxed-quasinormal mode frequencies of the caged rotating linear dilaton black hole. They employed Maggiore's method, which evaluates the transition frequency in the adiabatic invariant quantity from the highly damped quasinormal modes, in order to investigate the entropy/area spectra of the rotating linear dilaton black hole.

Expressing their pleasure and honor in representing EMU in a highly respected journal of physics, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı and Gülnihal Tokgöz stated that they will be involved in further research and produce important projects in the near future.

Albert Einstein’s Journal

Annalen der Physik (Annals of Physics) is one of the oldest scientific journals on physics which has been published since 1790. The journal publishes original, peer-reviewed papers in the areas of experimental, theoretical, applied, and mathematical physics and related areas. Originally, Annalen der Physik was published in German. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the journal published in both German and English. After the German reunification in 1990, English became the only language of the journal. Since 1990, the journal has been acquired by Wiley-VCH. The journal is abstracted and indexed by famous indexes including Web of Science (Impact Factor: 3.048).

Annalen der Physik hosted and is still hosting the publications of numerous famous (some of whom were Nobel Prize winners) physicians including Benjamin Thompson, Henry Cavendish, Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Peter Debye, Erwin Schrödinger, Niels Bohr, Franz Wegner, Peter W. Higgs and many other prominent researchers. Unquestionably, the most important person contributing the worldwide fame of the journal was Albert Einstein, who published his works in the said journal between 1905 and 1916. The most notable work of Einstein was “General Relativity Theory”, which provided a better understanding of the universe. In this respect, Annalen der Physik is more selective in the publication of articles on General Relativity Theory.
