EMU Interior Architecture Students’ Remarkable Success

Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty, Interior Architecture Department students participated in the 9th National Furniture Design Competition with their furniture design projects produced within the framework of the “Furniture and Fixtures” course. The projects of the said students have been ranked within the first 100 out of 2000 entires and qualified for the second stage of the competition.

The 9th National Furniture Design Competition aims to contribute to the development of the vision for the future in the field of home furnishings, furniture industry in Turkey representing the product and the identity of the design quality as well as to bring together the industry and talented interior architects. First project submissions for the competition took place on 23 December 2015. Undergraduate and postgraduate students, academicians and professional designers from different areas of  the TRNC and Turkey participated in the said competition.

The competition invites current and prospective designers to design flexible, eco friendly and transportation efficient furniture units and systems through benefitting from the possibilities provided by new materials and by considering the structure of the furniture sector.

The main difference of the 9th National Furniture Design Contest from others is its contribution to the development of future vision in the field of home furniture, its support towards product identity symbolizing Turkish furniture industry’s design quality and contemporary Turkish design and, most importantly, the context it provides enabling the future designer candidates to meet with the furniture sector and pursue employment opportunities. The said competition also provides state-supported educational possibilities for the award winning designers at Italy’s Domus Academy, USA- CCS College and Italy-NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti).

In line with the aims of the competition, during the current academic year, EMU Interior Architecture Department organised the Furniture and Fixtures Course (INAR 403) delivered by Maya N. Öztürk in a way preparing the students for the aforesaid competition. A total of 7 EMU Interior Architecture students participated in the competition in house, office, kitchen-bathroom and smart furniture categories. In this respect, Mustafa Maraşlı and Aizhan Turekhanova’s group project has been ranked within the first 100 projects and became successful in the first phase of the competition. Results of the second phase of the competition are expected to be announced in April.
