EMU Industrial Engineering Student Team Comes 4th in Case Analysis Competition

A team of students formed by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering Student Club (IE-Club) came 4th among Turkey’s 15 distinguished universities in a two-day Case Study Competition, organized annually by EMT (Turkish Industrial Engineering Societies Association), Turkey’s largest Industrial Engineering Student Union.   

Founded in 2005, the Industrial Engineering Societies Association (EMT), which aims to bring together the Industrial Engineering student clubs in Turkey and in Cyprus, is the first and only legal entity associated with Industrial Engineering. Growing since its foundation, it hosts Industrial Engineering Societies in 15 distinguished universities in Turkey. EMU Industrial Engineering Student Club is one of the founding members of the society and is the only membering student club on the island. Among the objectives of EMT is to enable Industrial Engineering and Management Engineering students to face the difficulties of business life through various events and competitions, and to gain knowledge and experience about the possible problems they may encounter in their careers, the projects they will participate and the crises they will have to manage.

The Case Analysis Competition is a two-stage event in which undergraduate and graduate students from 15 EMT membering universities can participate. In Turkey,  the event can reach 10,000 Industrial Engineering and Management Engineering students. 15 teams determined as a result of local qualifiers organized by each society are eligible to participate in the Grand Final and represent their institution, accordingly.

According to the information given by EMU Industrial Engineering Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan İzbırak, EMU Industrial Engineering Department was represented by the team consisting of Nilay Olgun, Emine Göktaş and Alperen Kıvanç Karademir at the Grand Final held online this year due to the pandemic on 3-4 April 2021. During the first day of the competition participated by Turkey’s 15 leading universities including METU, Boğaziçi, Koç and Yıldız Technical University students competed on the "Card Payment Systems" prepared by Yapı Kredi and on the second day, students conducted case analysis on the topic "Optimization in Logistics Transportation" prepared by BOSCH. The EMU Industrial Engineering team, consisting of Nilay Olgun, Emine Göktaş and Alperen Kıvanç Karademir, ranked 3rd among 15 teams on the first day of the competition and at the end of the second day, with the total score of the two days, the team ranked 4th in the overall ranking.
