EMU Hosted Resuscitation and Trauma Symposium

In scope of the World Paramedics Day celebrations, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), School of Health Services, First and Emergency Aid Associate Degree Program academic staff members and students held a Resuscitation and Trauma Symposium at EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall on Wednesday, 22 December 2021. During the symposium, 22 December Paramedics Day was celebrated. The opening speeches of the conference, which consisted of five different sessions, were delivered by EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Director of the School of Health Services Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç and First and Emergency Aid Associate Degree Program academic staff member Senior Instructor and Paramedic Tarık Balcı.

Basic Life Support Discussed

In the first session titled “Basic Life Support” moderated by Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoç, Sen. Inst. Paramedic Tarık Balcı gave a speech titled “AHA 2020 and ERC 2021 Guidelines for Public Practitioners and Healthcare Professionals in Basic Life Support”. Then Sen. Inst. Gülcan Dürüst Sakallı delivered her presentation titled “Technological Innovations in Basic Life Support”. The second session of the symposium titled “Advanced Life Support” was held under the moderation of EMU Health Sciences Faculty Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülten Sucu Dağ. In the second session, Sen. Inst. Paramedic Sinan Nural talked about “What Has Changed in the 2020 AHA and ERC 2021 Guidelines?” and Paramedic Rüçhan Tuğçen Karagül presented information on “Post-Resuscitation Care HAA 2020 and ERC 2021 Guidelines”.

Emergency Intervention for the Traumatized Patient

In the third session moderated by Sen. Inst. Gülcan Dürüst Sakallı, the following presentations were delivered: Sen. Inst. Emine Temizkan Sekizler’s “AHA 2020 and ERC 2021 Guidelines in Pediatric Basic Life Support”, Dr. Uğur Özkula’s “Pediatric Advanced Life Support AHA 2020 and ERC 2021 Guidelines”. In the fourth session titled “Emergency Intervention for the Traumatized Patient” moderated by Senior Instructor Paramedic Sinan Nural, Sen. Inst. Paramedic Sinan Nural’s “Evaluation and Transport of the Traumatized Patient” and “Current Changes in Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support” by Doctor Faculty Member Uğur Özkula were delivered. The fifth session titled “Acute Coronary Syndromes” was moderated by Paramedic Rüçhan Tuğçen Karagül. In the fifth session, Sen. Inst. Paramedic Sinan Nural made a presentation titled “Emergency Intervention in STMI Cases” and Paramedic Oğuzhan Canbaz delivered a presentation titled “Emergency Intervention in Non STMI Cases”. The symposium, in which the students actively participated, continued with the question and answer part and ended after the closing speech of Senior Instructor Paramedic Tarık Balcı.

Courses Offered as Part of the Symposium 

On Thursday, 23 December 2021, “Bleeding Control Course”, “Needle Decompression Course”, “Advanced Airway Course”, “Intaosseosis Intervention Course” and “Cricothyrotomy Course” were offered at EMU Health Sciences Faculty as part of the symposium. The courses, which garnered great interest and full participation, continued throughout the day. While celebrating the 22nd December Paramedic day with the symposium and the courses organized within the scope of the symposium, the importance of the paramedic profession was once again emphasized for health professionals.
