EMU Holds Panel Titled "How to Grow Old Healthily and Successfully"

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences collaborated with Famagusta Municipality to hold a panel titled “How To Grow Old Healthily and Successfully”. The panel that took place at the Raif Rauf Denktas Culture and Congress Center on the 8th of June 2016 between 14:00 to 16:00, touched upon growing old healthily and what it means to grow old successfully.

EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sozen thanked all attending the panel whilst stating that the number of elderly people is constantly rising in our globalizing world. Noting that aging is an inevitable process Prof. Dr. Sozen stated that what is important is aging in a healthy manner. After touching on the importance of life quality, Prof. Dr. Sozen highlighted the fact that as well as providing education, universities must also search for solutions to problems communities may have.  Prof. Dr. Sozen concluded his remarks by wishing everybody a productive panel.

Famagusta Mayor Ismail Arter underlined the importance of being healthy in every period of life whilst providing a reminder that health problems can occur at all ages, not only in the later periods of one’s life. Noting that the panel included some very important information, Arter thanked all involved in bringing the panel to life.

After the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Sozen handed the speakers Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Işık, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Handan Sezgin, faculty members Ünal Deger, Burcu Barbaros and Sinem Dag a plaque of appreciation.

The moderator of the panel, Dean of the Health Sciences Faculty Prof. Dr. Mehtap Malkoc stated that they do not like the words old age noting that aging in a healthy manner is more important. Stating her pleasure of organizing this panel in cooperation with the Famagusta Municipality, Prof. Dr. Malkoc noted that the Health Sciences Faculty will continue to provide public services.

The panel was divided into two sessions. In the first session Prof. Dr. Isik gave a presentation on “The Successful Aging Process” whilst faculty member Deger gave a presentation on “The Risk of Elders Falling and the Importance of Physical Activity”.  In the second session of the panel, faculty member Barbaros gave a presentation on “Correct Nutritional Habits for Elders”, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sezgin gave a presentation on “Correct and Regular Use of Drugs / Important Medical  Screening” and faculty member Dağ gave a presentation on “Arrangement of the Home and Security Precautions”.
