EMU Faculty of Law Academic Staff Attended 1st International Personal Data Protection Congress

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Law academic staff members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Çelik Ulusoy and Assist. Prof. Dr. Can Azer presented a paper at the 1st International Congress on Protection of Personal Data, organized in cooperation with the Republic of Turkey Personal Data Protection Authority, Istanbul University Faculty of Law and Turkish-German University Faculty of Law. Organized between 12 and 14 November 2021 with the theme of "Developments in the World and Turkey", the congress was held face-to-face and online (hybrid). The congress aimed to create an environment that will increase the international competitive capacity of private and public sector actors in the data-based economy. Sessions were held in Turkish and English at the international congress. In addition to Hürol Mear, Head of the Personal Data Protection Board of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), academics, public administrators and employees from Turkey and the world, relevant non-governmental organizations and participants interested in this field participated in the congress. The Congress was broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Republic of Turkey Personal Data Protection Agency. Three Presentations from EMU 

Three different presentations were delivered from EMU among the papers that were evaluated and accepted by the members of the Scientific Committee in accordance with the principles of blind refereeing. At the 10th Session held on the third day of the congress and chaired by Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Law academic staff member Prof. Dr. Nuran Koyuncu, EMU Law Faculty academic staff member and TRNC Personal Data Protection Board member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Çelik Ulusoy made a presentation entitled "The Right to Protection of Personal Data in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in the Context of the Applicability of the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)". Afterwards, EMU Law Faculty academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Can Azer presented a paper titled "The Conflict of Personal Data Protection and Right to Obtain Information in the TRNC in the Light of the Decisions of the TRNC Personal Data Protection Board and the Information Evaluation Board". Finally, in the same session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Çelik Ulusoy and Cyprus International University Faculty of Law Assist. Prof. Dr. Fatma Esenyel Hanaz's joint presentation titled "Tripartite View on Legal Compliance Conditions in the Processing of Personal Data: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Republic of Turkey and EU Review" was presented. English and Turkish abstracts of the presentations will appear in the International Proceedings Book to be published by the Republic of Turkey Personal Data Protection Agency.
