EMU Faculty of Health Sciences will Blaze Another Trail

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences is leading the way once again and offers the opportunity to allow students take post graduate courses while studying at undergraduate level. EMU Faculty of Health Sciences is starting a practice that will provide a great advantage for its students: students will be able to take post graduate courses while studying at undergraduate programme and complete the two degrees together.

Prof. Dr. Hülya Harutoğlu, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and the Director of School of Health Services indicated that the Faculty and the School of Health Services within the faculty are continuing to grow with new openings and the faculty has about 2500 students, about 100 academic staff and 14 fully equipped laboratories in its fourth year; and highlighted that it keeps to grow with its Post Graduate programmes opened in 2013-2014 Academic Year.

Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu emphasized that they keep growing with the support of respected universities like Hacettepe, Ankara, Marmara, İstanbul and Dokuz Eylül and they became one of the most preferred faculties in a short time. Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu gave the good news that the practice that will provide great advantages for the students will be applied in the Spring Semester with the senate decision and highlighted the fact that although similar examples are available in many universities in the world and in some universities in Turkish Republic, they will be the first in TRNC to iniate a good movement for students.

Undergraduate students will be able to be integrated into the Graduate

Prof. Dr. Hülya Harutoğlu said that undergraduate students after second year will be able to take post graduate courses if they fulfil the criteria and will pursue undergraduate and post graduate degrees together. This practice enables to shorten students education period and allows them to finish post graduate programme in a shorter time and start their careers sooner. Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu who mentioned that students showed a great interest in this practice and the number of applications is very high; also stated that they will provide a great contribution to fill in the academician gap in the Health Faculties in both Turkish Republic and TRNC.

Master and Ph.D. Programmes will be increased

Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu stated that they are planning to open the Ph.D. programmes of the Master degrees on “Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation” and “Nutrition and Dietetics” as well as starting the Master programmes on Nursing and Health Management in 2014-2015 Academic Year. Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu mentioned that it is an important privilege that successful students from Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Nutrition and Dietetics departments in 2013-2014 Academic Year are able to take post-graduate courses. Prof. Dr. Harutoğlu also indicated that this practice provides a great advantage for students along with quality education and it will also play an important role for choosing the Faculty of Health Sciences, thus, they anticipate more increase in the student numbers for next year.
