EMU Faculty of Architecture Organizes “3rd Annual Research Day” Event

Organized by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Department of Architecture, the “3rd Annual Research Day” event took place at Alpay Özdural Hall at the EMU Faculty of Architecture. Held with the purpose of showcasing recent research and scholarly work in architecture, the event convened academics and researchers from the field.

Beser Oktay Vehbi

“A Valuable Contribution to Academic Identity and Scientific Visibility of the Faculty”

In her opening address, Prof. Dr. Beser Oktay Vehbi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, highlighted that the event organized by the Department of Architecture plays an important role in strengthening a robust research culture and incorporating scholarly activities into architectural education. She noted that the event significantly enhances the faculty’s academic profile and visibility within the scientific community, and expressed her appreciation to the organizing committee and all participants for their contributions.

Rafooneh M. Sani

“A Strong Academic Tradition”

Prof. Dr. Rafooneh M. Sani, Chair of the EMU Department of Architecture, noted that Research Day has evolved into a well-established academic tradition within the faculty and the department. She explained that the event serves as an important platform for expanding knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration, and nurturing a strong research culture. Highlighting the participation of distinguished international academics alongside presentations by EMU faculty members and doctoral students, Prof. Dr. Sani stated that these contributions demonstrate the university’s dedication to research. She added that Research Day is not limited to presentations alone, but also provides a dynamic setting that encourages intellectual exchange, critical reflection, and ongoing academic dialogue.

Nafia Akdeniz

Within the scope of the program, keynote presentations were held, along with the sharing of research conducted by academics and researchers honored with the EMU Conference Award. Assist. Prof. Dr. Nafia Akdeniz discussed her work on spatial narratives in the context of urban mapping, while Assist. Prof. Dr. Nevter Zafer Cömert addressed the development and transformation of marginal building patterns in Nicosia through a qualitative perspective. Additionally, doctoral student Negin Nazari Moayed evaluated the role of contemporary museum spaces in promoting socio-cultural sustainability, drawing on the example of Kyrenia Castle.

During the subsequent keynote sessions, current issues in architecture and urban research were examined at varying scales. Dr. Cem Taneri addressed non-invasive assessment techniques and diagnostic practices in architectural heritage, Dr. Giorgio Gasco discussed concepts of modernity and future urban visions through the example of tower buildings in Ankara, and Dr. Özge Selen Kansu Duran presented a study focusing on a multidimensional sustainability framework for resilient urban environments.
