EMU Department of Interior Architecture Hosted a Talk by Independent Researcher Pelin Derviş on the History of Architecture

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture had an interview with architect, independent researcher, author and editor Pelin Derviş about "Thinking and Visualization as a Tool in Architectural Models in Turkey - A Section of the 20th Century" on January 7, 2021 on Thursday, at 10: 00. At the talk, which was held online, EMU Architecture Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Uğur Ulaş Dağlı, Interior Architecture Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zehra Öngül, Interior Architecture Department academic staff member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Asu Tozan and ITAS225 Interior Architecture History-I course students took part.

Pelin Derviş Publication Project's first book, “Thinking Architecture in Turkey as a Tool for Modeling and Visualization - A Perspective from the 20th Century”, was published in cooperation with the Association of Architects in 1927. The book includes texts referring to the model's architectural practice-education-history and its place in the archive, as well as the life stories of eight model makers — Sami Pazarbaşı, Sidel Pazarbaşı, Yusuf Z. Ergüleç, Selahattin Yazıcı, Mehmet Şener, Varjan Yurtgülü, İhsan Kostak and Murat Küçük — It includes a selection of works and productions. 

The Architectural Modeling Project first appeared in Turkey in 2017. The exhibition was conducted at Studio-X and titled as “Thinking as a Tool for Visualization and Architectural Models in Istanbul Turkey”. The book includes both this exhibition, which allows the work to flourish, and the archive-specific studies and discussions in this context with the METU Faculty of Architecture and SALT Research collaborated during the study process.

Who is Pelin Derviş?

She graduated from Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture. She completed her master's degree in the field of Architectural History at the same institution. Between 1999 and 2004, she created projects in diversity and scales ranging from city inventory to space and object design in the Atmosphere Planning and Design Office, which she founded. After 2004, she focused entirely on the cultural production dimension of architecture and research projects. Between 2005-2010, she worked on various exhibitions, events and publications at Garanti Gallery - operating in the fields of city, architecture and design - which she managed. Garanti Gallery contributed to the establishment of SALT, which was formed by the combination of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center and the Ottoman Bank Archive and Research Center. She started working independently in 2010. In 2014, she founded Joint Production, in which she is still working. She contributed to the establishment and development of the Urban and Child Studies Master’s Program at Kadir Has University (2018-2020).

In 2020, she founded the Pelin Derviş Publication Project, a Joint Production initiative. It realizes research and recording studies and cultural activities with projects carried out in cooperation with various institutions, independent architects and designers.
