EMU Department of Civil Engineering Organizes Traditional Pasta Building Competition and Certificate Ceremony

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department organized a “Traditional Pasta Building Model Competition” within the scope of ‘Introduction to Civil Engineering’  (CIVL100) and ‘İnşaat Mühendisliğine Giriş’ (INSA100) courses. As part of the event, students who have achieved success in the 2023-2024 Academic Year Spring Semester were also presented with High Honour and Honour Certificates during a certificate ceremony held.

Held the participations of EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç and the Dean of EMU Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özkaramanlı, the event featured presentation of participation certificates to the Vice Head of EMU Department of Civil Engineering Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Çelik, who fulfilled the coordinatorship duty in collaboration with the Urban Planning Department, EMU Research Assistant Efecan Ünal and to all students who have contributed to the project.

In his remark, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Kılıç congratulated the Civil Engineering students for their hard work and success. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Kılıç acknowledged the pivotal role of civil engineering in human history, underscoring its contribution to the development of civilizations. Prof. Dr. Kılıç also emphasized that success requires consistent effort, determination, and dedication.

Head of EMU Department of Civil Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eriş Uygar emphasized the importance of student activities and noted that the building model competition is a first step taken into the world of design. Uygar explained that this competition allows students to experience the fundamental parameters they will face in real projects, as it is an event where load transfer, structural components, and connections are explored through experimental techniques.

In the Pasta Building Model Competition, the building model that incorporated a space truss system and was able to support over 26 kilograms of weight using only 250 grams of pasta during static vertical loading tests won first place. The competition was evaluated by a panel of judges from the EMU Civil Engineering Department, including Prof. Dr. Mahmood Hosseini, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cemal Geneş, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Giray Özay, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Umut Yıldırım. The top three students in the competition were awarded gift vouchers, sponsored by Baygül Café.
