EMU Department of Architecture Starts Webinar Series – Tracing Contemporary Residential Architecture of Cyprus

The first session of webinar series titled “Tracing Contemporary Residential Architecture of Cyprus” organized by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture took place on online platforms on Monday, the 19th of October, 2020 at 13:30. Middle East Technical University graduate architecture Onur Olguner shared the story of his two residential architecture projects with Architectural Design I students. The second session of the webinar series took place on Thursday, 22nd of October, 2020 between 13:30 and 16:30. Cemil Atakara, Ertuğ Ertuğrul and Kemal Kasapoğlu made presentations during the second session.

Students Met with Experts 

Cemil Atakara who owns the Cemil Atakara Architecture Office is an academic staff member and also the vice dean of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture Faculty in International Cyprus University. Moreover, Atakara is a graduate of EMU Faculty of Architecture and, he still works on projects in Turkey, Syria and North Cyprus. The second presentation was made by Union of The Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) Execute Board member architect Ertuğ Ertuğrul. Following his undergraduate study on Architecture in Yıldız Technical University, Ertuğrul completed his postgraduate degree on Residence and Urbanization field in Architectural Association School in London. Working on various projects in Turkey and France, Ertuğrul still works Ertuğrul Architecture Office. The last speaker in the second session of the webinars was Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty and Sheffield University graduate Kemal Kasapoğlu who is a present academic staff member in EMU. Kasapoğlu presented two of his architectural projects with students and other participants of the webinar. 

Webinar Series to be continued

The event designed in a way that would service as an experimental studio work focusing on collaboration-oriented learning approach is coordinated by EMU Architecture Faculty, Department of Architecture ARCH 291 Architectural Design I studio team members Prof. Dr. Kokan Grchev, Asisst. Prof. Dr. Pınar U. Righelato, Dr. Sevil Aydınlık and research assistant Şerife Hikmet. The aim of the event is to encourage active student participation in design-oriented education as well as help students to improve their problem solving and decision making skills.

The event aims to reach a wider amount of audience during the 2020-2021 Academic Year Fall Semester by the help of the collaborations with Research Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Built Environment (ISBE) and, Housing Education, Research and Advisory Center (HERA). Another objective of the webinar series is to raise awareness on architecture occupation and importance of residential design within the society and, provide clues on the ways of interaction between user/client and architects. The webinar series are planned to continue during the 2020-2021 Academic Year Spring Semester.
