EMU Commemorates Martyrs

As part of Eastern Mediterranean University, Education Faculty, Educational Sciences Department, Psychological Counseling and Guidance Program’s Community Services Application course and in collaboration with Atatürk’s Ideology Club, a commemoration ceremony was organised within the framework of 21 December Martyr’s Week. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Assembly Vice Chair Hüseyin Avkıran Alanlı also attended the said event which took place at Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall at 2:00 p.m. on 22 December 2015.

EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam delivered a speech at the said event which commenced with a moment of silence and the national anthem. Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam commemorated the martyrs who have a significant place in Cyprus Turkish history and added that we all should learn from the past to have a bright future.

TRNC Assembly Vice Chair Alanlı also delivered a speech and thanked everyone who contributed to this meaningful organisation. Alanlı talked about the history of Cyprus and commemorated all martyrs who are the reasons for the existence of the Turkish Cypriots.

Following the opening addresses, EMU Atatürk Research and Application Center academic staff member Turgay Bülent Göktürk talked about the history of Cyprus. A video about Muratağa, Atlılar and Sandallar was also screened during the said organisation. After the video screening, Muratağa, Atlılar, Sandallar Martyrs Association Chair Ahmet Aşır and history instrucor Aysel Soykara shared memories about massacres which took place at Muratağa, Atlılar and Sandallar villages. At the end of the event, plaques of appreciation were presented to Aşır and Soykara.
