EMU Cinema and Television Department Students Shoot “Soul of Othello” Short Film with Professionals

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Communication Faculty, Cinema and Television Department students shoot a short film titled “Soul of Othello” with the collaborations of leading cinema sector professionals from the Republic of Turkey. During the 2021-2022 Academic Year Fall Semester, EMU Cinema and Television Department students had the chance to experience a professional film set environment within the scope of the short-film project assigned to them in “Directing and Producing in Cinema” course taught by EMU Communication Faculty, Cinema and Television Department academic staff member Emre Oskay, one of the producers of Oscar nominated “Mustang” film.

Students Get Together with Famous Director, Actors and Actresses

Famous Turkish director Can Evrenol, one of the leading actresses of Tims&B’s rating record breaking production “Bir Zamanlar Çukurova” Selin Yeninci and Arın Kuşaksızoğlu from “Nuh Tepesi” film took part in the shooting process of “Soul of Othello” short film. The first day of the shooting consisted of a training course with the participation of Evrenol, Yeninci and Kuşaksızoğlu as well as the preliminary preparations needed for the project. Each student were given the opportunity of experiencing a real-life film set atmosphere. The shootings of the film generally took place at Othello Castle and the Arsinoe Guest House located in Famagusta Walled City. During the project, students had the chance to receive guidance from the professionals in the sector and to learn how to overcome obstacles that can happen during a film shooting process. EMU Communication Faculty, Cinema and Television Department Head Prof. Dr. Bahire Efe Özad expressed that the shooting process were very beneficial for the students and future projects are to come in this respect.

Representing EMU

Being a dystopic short film shot by students, “Soul of Othello” will be representing EMU in both national and international festivals. The project was realized with the contributions of the EMU Rector’s Office, vice Rector for Social and Cultural Affairs Prof. Dr. Deniz İşçioğlu, Communication Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Senih Çavuşoğlu and Cinema and Television Department Head Prof. Dr. Bahire Efe Özad. Can Evrenol shared his experiences on being a Director as well as Script and Cinematography Director. On the other hand, Selin Yeninci and Arın Kuşaksızoğlu shared their knowledge and experiences on acting and communication with actors/actresses topics. The producers of the film are Emre Oskay and Can Evrenol, along with the course assistant Ümit Akdeniz as the line producer. 

The Plot of the Film

The short film “Soul of Othello” has a dystopian fictional story about someone finding the letters written by a woman who lived in Othello Castle many years ago and kept her secrets. Making a statement about the project, Emre Oskay said, “Our main goal in the production of the project is to portray the preservation of the Othello Castle in international film festivals, despite the passing time.”
