EMU Architecture Department Launches a Campaign for Refugees

Having introduced an array of civic involvement projects during the previous semesters including tree planting in Tatlısu, beach, park and yard cleaning activities in Famagusta, Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Faculty has launched another meaningful similar project involving a donation campaign for refugees. A panel and charity event which took place at EMU Architecture Faculty on 14 March 2016 was participated by hundreds of architecture students, academicians and research assistants.

With the slogan of “Let’s Build Justice for Refugees Together”, the event jointly organised by EMU Architecture Faculty and the Refugee Rights Association, commenced with a panel which took place with the participation of EMU Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sözen, Mete Hatay  from Cyprus Peace Research Institute, Refugee Rights Association Communication Manager Sıla Tüfekçioğlu and EMU Architecture Department Chair Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek.

During the panel, difficulties encountered by refugees and refugee rights were among the topics of discussion. Stressing the fact that any of us could become a refugee one day, the speakers highlighted the importance of supporting refugees in these difficult days. During his speech, EMU Architecture Department Chair Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek stated that each architect should demonstrate sensitivity towards issues as such. Prof. Dr. Dinçyürek also thanked the students for their intensive interest towards the activity. Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Sözen also extended his appreciation to Architecture Department Chair Prof. Dr. Dinçyürek and Architecture Department for the organisation of the event.

As part of the event, students of architecture department donated various items of food, and cleaning products as well as school items, toys, nappies and baby food for children. The event which continued with a a cocktail provided motivation for students to take part in similar prospective activities.
