EMU Announced as a Top University for Physical Sciences

On Tuesday, the 19th of November 2019, UK based Times Higher Education (THE) released its 2020 World University Rankings for physical sciences (mathematics, physics and astronomy, chemistrty and statistics). The rankings featured giant universities such as Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, University of Cambridge, Stanford University and Harvard University. By featuring in the 601-800 band of the rankings, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) became the only university from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to feature on the rankings.

A Total of 1054 Universities Made it to the Rankings

A total of 1054 universities made the rankings. EMU was sixth amongst Turkish universities, featuring behind Bilkent University in the 401-500 band, Boğaziçi University, Koç University and Sabancı University in the 501-600 band and Atılım University in the 601-800 band. A total of 26 Turkish universities made the rankings. EMU was third amongst Cypriot universities following two universities from South Cyprus that appeared in the 401-500 and 601-800 bands.

First on the Nature Index Rankings

The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences had previously been ranked first in all of Cyprus in the Physical Sciences category of Nature Index’s European University Rankings, which has been annually announcing success rankings by country and academic institutions since 2015. In the period covering August 1, 2018 - July 31, 2019, EMU was ranked 2nd in Cyprus (including South Cyprus) in the European University Ranking of Nature Index 2019 in all fields with its publications and academic achievements. By ranking within the top 35 institutions in Europe and the top 10 in Turkey, EMU earned the Nature Index Badge.

EMU on World Rankings

The Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) also featured in the 501-600 band of THE’s 2020 rankings of universities providing engineering and technology education. A total of 1008 universities featured on the list in which EMU was fifth amongst Turkish universities, second amongst Cypriot universities and the only university from the TRNC. In addition, on the 6th of November 2019, EMU featured in the 201-250 band of THE’s ranking of universities for Business and Economics education in 2020. EMU was the only university from the TRNC to feature on the list. EMU ranked higher than any Turkish university or university from South Cypurs.
