Community of Mediterranean Universities Assembly Takes Place at EMU

The annual Council and Assembly of the Community of Mediterranean Universities (CMU) was held at the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU). EMU is a member of CMU. The general assembly took place in Malta last year. There it was decided that this year’s meeting would take place in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The general assembly gathered at the EMU Rector’s Office Senate Hall under the auspices of CMU President Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elaswad and EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam at 09:00 on Friday, the 25th of October 2019. In his opening speech, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam thanked the representatives of the universities from the Mediterranean for coming to the TRNC and wished everyone a fruitful meeting. In a speech of his own, CMU President Prof. Dr. Mohamed Elaswad thanked EMU for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Program Commenced with a Workshop

The program commenced with a workshop. The first presentation was delivered by Dr. Besma Fayech from Tunis University’s National School of Engineering. In the presentation titled “HOMERe Mobility Program”, Dr. Fayech touched upon the organization HOMERe which was established to train qualified executives for companies operating in the Mediterranean by presenting long-term internship opportunities. Dr. Fayech noted that 417 interns have been taken on by companies within the scope of the program.

The next presentation was delivered by Prof. Dr. Massimo Guarascio from the University of Rome. The presentation titled “Accreditation of Study Programmes and Graduate Students Mobility in the Mediterranean and Europe” touched upon why accreditations are important. Next, Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova from EMU delivered the presentation titled “Developing an Internationalization Strategy without Sacrificing the Unique Identity” during which he described EMU’s international journey. Providing information such as why students choose education institutions abroad Prof. Dr. Tanova touched upon the risks and advantages during decision making processes. Prof. Dr. Tanova also highlighted that internationalization must occur without losing local identity.

EMU Rector was Chosen to be a Country Representative

The CMU Assembly continued with lunch at the EMU L’Apprenti Restaurant at 12:30 and the annual Council Meeting at 14:30. At the General Assembly, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam was elected to be a CMU Country Representative. The Community of Mediterranean Universities meeting came to an end after the General Assembly at 16:30 and dinner at 20:00.
